Hi, I was wondering what is the examples of shift differential where you work. My husband gets 20% more for graveyards and Sundays. I just started my first job on the afternoon shift 3 p-11 p and will be starting graveyards 10:30 pm-7 am in 2 weeks. I asked someone else what the shift diff was and it is only .50 more per hour. I thought was kind of ridiculous. Is this a normal shift diff or just extremely low compensation for working a tough schedule?
thanks

I was just at a meeting with our DON and administrator and the shift diff subject was brought up - yes, we get NOTHING!!! for 3-11 or 11-7 or weekends. They sd it wasn't needed and that we work those shifts because we want to. I sd we need to be competitive. They came back with the corporate office doesn't allow it. End of story. Is this common??
well ladies and any gentlemen prepare to be as jealous as you can stand. i just started a ltcf just to get my feet wet after being out of nursing for a little over 2 yrs. and my shift/diff will be a whopping nothing. that is right i'm going to be on the 11p-730a shift and would make the same thing on days. i'm doing it sun and mon. nites and doing agency days the rest of the time. i get no shift/diff if i work weekends either. i'm just doing because the shift and days are working well for my kids scheadule. hey i know your really jealous:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: but what can i tell ya....:chuckle :chuckle e-mail me privately for tips on how to get screwed over at your job:imbar

I live in Southeast Virginia and work at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Our shift diff is $8/hr for nights. $6/hr for weekend days. You are also entitled to the $8/hr shift diff for 3-11 shifts!! I am also the charge nurse and I get an extra $1/hr for that.
If anyone is interested in moving here there is a sign-on incentive for you and the person who recruits you. Extra cash in your pocket monthly for 2 years.
Starting pay for a new RN is $18.25
johnsonne,
I think that this can be quite common if it is allowed to be. I think that a lot of times we are so afraid of losing our jobs that we forget that we have rights and are entitled to decent wages and safe working conditions. If nurses start refusing to work nights and weekends enough, there may be chance of a change, but as long as people are working the shifts for the same money, there will be no change. I'm sorry to hear about it and wish you guys the best.

$5.00 nights, $3.00 weekends. So weekend nights is $8.00. Sounds like yours is quite low. Another hospital in my area is 20% of base pay for nights, don't know about weekends.
