SFSU ELMSN Fall 2023

Published

Hi everyone,

I just submitted my application to SFSU's ELMSN program for fall 2023. I didn't see a thread for this, so creating one here if you'd like to share your experiences, updates, and decisions! Based on the previous thread for fall 2022 it doesn't seem like we will hear from admissions until April. Best of luck to everyone!

I didn't know we were supposed to fill out financial aid??

I haven't but I didn't fill out financial aid because I thought we could do that later ?‍♀️

You should apply for FAFSA. And include the schools name as one of your picks. That's the way you'll be able to receive loans. I don't know if it's too late to apply for 23-24 school year though. But look it up!

Thank you!

It's not too late to sign up for FAFSA. You should do it.

Good luck everyone! I was wondering, are y'all planning to do the post master's NP Program? If so, we have to work for at least a year and reapply to the program right? I honestly don't know how to feel about that since I was accepted into other programs that are Entry level Masters and you finish as an NP but they are more expensive programs. So, I am not really sure what to do if I do get into SFSU as it is a way longer process to become an NP.

I don't think it's a good idea to work as an NP with no experience as a nurse. People will also treat you differently if you are a provider with zero experience. I'd do the program that takes longer to become an NP so you can truly be the best NP as possible.

Yeah I agree but the other program (Northeastern) I am considering has a step out year so it required me to get experience as an RN for a year before returning to the NP portion of the program anyways! The difference is the price, length of program, and having to reapply for me.

I plan to do the postmasters NP Program; it is longer but I do understand why they make nurses wait a year to apply; I think it's to get experience as a nurse first. If you get in, I think you should weigh out your options and what matters to you the most. Length of time to reach your goal, or the cost of the program that offer NP in their ELM programs. Ultimately, either decision will be great. You'll get knowledge either way!! Best of luck to you and your journey.

Thank you for your response! Do yall know if the post master program relatively easy to get into?

While I don't know if I plan to do NP, I DO know I have absolutely NO DESIRE to do FNP as I do not want to do primary care. I would rather do a Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AG ACNP) program. I currently work in a cardiology office as a medical assistant and we have had several NP students in these programs come through and they're better prepared to specialize in care (such as cardiology) and help round in the hospital and that's where I see myself; should I complete an NP Program.

In the website, it is not clear if you need to reapply. I feel like you don't but if I get in, I will call before I decide where to go. Some schools like UPenn, there is not application. Other schools like usd, it's a totally different program and you need to apply.

I also wonder if they will keep the post-masters program or what will happen as there are talks about requiring NPs to have a doctorate in a few years....
