Sen Clinton walks a day in a nurse's shoes

Nurses Activism

"I think that as a result of our time together, Senator Clinton has a better understanding of the energy and hard work it takes to care for patients for 12 hours and then come home to raise a family," Estrada said in a statement. "I'd welcome her back on the job any time."

It was only a day, but it's a step in the right direction.

excuse me when and where has Mrs. Clinton ever, and I do mean ever........done anything to improve the lot of nursing..........she is all about getting healthcare to everyone. not about improving Nursing.....:trout:

Yes, you are right. I have been aware of her quest for universal healthcare. She does seem to be focusing recently on the nursing shortage with trying to fund education for nursing, but that is a whole other debate:

How successful would universal healthcare be with a nursing shortage?

BTW I said "try" to improve. :lol2:

read the blogs from the CNN report on her day...she was there 2 hours. Does one reallythink she saw the real day? Or were administrators buzzing about. I will bet she wasn't in a room where their was an incontinent patient or a fresh tracheostomy or colostomy. I'll bet she didn't get near a patient on isolation with VRE or MRSA....did she follow a nurse near the breaking point with a full census & short staffed? just pondering all of this...

I think she is trying to undo that damaging rumor that went around about her about 10 years ago. The rumor had her saying that nurses are overpaid. I never saw any evidence that she really said any such thing but 20 different nurses must have told me about it. None of them could ever list a source like a newspaper quote or a video. Someone said it on a message board somewhere and most people that heard about it believed it.

I'm going to stick my neck out on this one: whether it was 2 hours or 12, I don't care. She focused on healthcare for at least 2 hours which is more than any other candidate has done (to my knowledge). Whether you are conservative or a liberal shouldn't matter - she brought the nursing shortage and healthcare into the limelight, albeit for 2 hours. Isn't that something we've all been trying to do for years?

I'm not saying she's the answer to healthcare. She's not. Nurses and the government need to work together. She's damned if she does and damned if she doesn't. Someone will complain if she didn't mention healthcare and someone is going to complain that she did, BUT she didn't do it 'their' way. Guess what? We're all adults here and have the right to vote so exercise your right. If you don't like how she handles healthcare, don't vote for her.

Or, if anyone thinks they have all the answers he or she can run for president providing they meet the age requirement and are a natural born citizen.

I'm now donning my flame resistant suit.

Well, Bethin - I have to agree with you - no one else has even gotten involved! Thanks for putting that out there....and for putting out there that she is not the answer!

i would vote for either one of these before i would vote for john edwards..i just get a creepy feeling when i watch him on a debate..i guess that is not he way to use your vote but i just don't trust the man but plese note he is white, male and highly educated

He creeps me out, too. I can't put my finger on why, but he does.

When I see a candidate wipe someone's butt, do trach care on someone with thick white secretions, change a dressing on a wound that smells to high heaven, etc, (you get my point), then I will be impressed.

I've got to point out again: none of the candidates are nurses. None of them have the professional knowledge to do trach or wound care. If a nurse allowed a shadow to do ANY of these things, it would be wrong.

I think it's a bit ridiculous to ask candidates to perform nursing tasks. Would you want to be the pt. on the receiving end of, say, Dick Cheney giving you an IV push med? (I know he's not running, just an example.) How comfortable would you be with John Edwards helping you with personal care?

Following a nurse for a day is a great idea, but hands-on? C'mon people--we're supposed to be pt. advocates!

He creeps me out, too. I can't put my finger on why, but he does.

He would be perfect in a movie about "The Stepford Husbands". Or "Invasion of the Body Snatchers". He is THAT creepy.

Yes- definitely 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers!" :lol2:

The thought of him touching any of my patients makes the hairs rise on the back of my neck. Blech.

I understand that....but you just made my point. They are not nurses and have no idea what the job entails. 2 hours of shadowing does not give you any idea the true life of a nurse - or probably any other job for that matter. Again I am not impressed. Maybe I'm just getting too old and too synical to believe any of them truly give a sh&*. ;)

Personally I wouldn't want any of the candiates from either side touching me :uhoh21: if I was sick.

Well, if Tommy Thompson had run, I think he would be ok - but you are right . . . . most of the candidates seem "other-worldly".
