Seattle Childrens Residency Fall 2021

Published

Hi!

Applications for the Seattle Children's nurse residency open up on May 3 and the OR residency application opens sometime in April. I have been working towards the OR residency, but I am applying to both because I am dead set on moving to Seattle and Seattle Children's is my #1 choice.

I have loved watching people on here talk throughout the application process, get hired, and start making their moves! I would love to connect with people who are applying to either the OR or the regular residency at Seattle Childrens and other Seattle area programs!

I just applied to Harborview the other day for their residency and periop 101 programs too!

I don't know if this applies to anyone, but they said the units you choose can impact your interview chance. Like if you chose from two different categories that can decrease the chance

Did the recruiter tell you that? I thought we were supposed to rank our choices? and that being open to other units demonstrates flexibility not a lack of interest in your first choice

It was in the powerpoint that was somewhere on the website. They categorized all the units into acute care or intensive care, and they said it's harder to organize interviews for both at the same time, so it makes the chances less if you choose both

Yeah. I saw that in the PowerPoint too so I stuck with just the critical care pathway and chose my choices from there.

I guess I read that as you just won't be able to interview for all of your choices. I am a wee bit devastated, I pretty much have everything riding on Tacoma general now

If you’re not set on peds but want to be in Seattle, Virginia mason is still hiring residents I believe! It’s supposed to be great there. If you are passionate about children’s you should apply again in October! They notice when people apply more than once and they encourage people to apply again

UW Medicine and Harborview also seem to have rolling admissions. Evergreen Health might also have some openings still

I had actually asked the recruiter about this since critical care only had 2 units hiring this time and he said they are doing things a bit differently this time and the powerpoint wasn't changed so I can choose any unit as my third choice. I ended up putting NICU, PICU, then oncology. But, I too did not get an invite to interview and I'm wondering if that was the reason. I really hope the recruiter didn't lead me astray because I also feel my resume is very strong with a peds internship, peds senior preceptorship, and working as a tech. Very upsetting as I turned down a great offer at Children's National in hopes of getting an offer at Seattle Children's.

Hi there! Does anyone have any insight on the interview process and types of questions they ask? thanks and good luck to all!

Has anyone heard about the interview time? The email said they would tell us by today

I haven’t heard anything yet either!  Good to know it wasn’t just me! I did the references and everything so hopefully we will here something soon.

For my interview they asked me a lot of basic questions. Like why work at Seattle Children's? Why Seattle if you're moving? Tell us about a conflict situation, a time you went above and beyond for a patient, a time you had to critically think to solve a problem, a time you had to advocate for a patient...etc. Honestly, my interview felt pretty chill. It was more like a conversation, and it lasted about an hour and 30 minutes.

There were two rounds. One with management and one with peers. I was interviewed through video and there were about 5-7 people in the first round sitting at a table and about the same for the second round. Everyone of course had on their masks, so it was hard to gauge their facial expressions. This was for the OR btw.
