scott & white

U.S.A. Texas

Hello everyone,

I have a question regarding Scott & White. Do they only hire new grads into their internship positions? I would LOVE to do an internship; however, the next critical care one is available in January. I just became a licensed RN in Texas in March and I will be moving down there until May. I honestly cannot wait until January to get a job :( I have been trying to apply to other positions on their website that all say minimum/no experience but I am not having any luck and I have no idea why! Any pointers? I am a new grad with no nursing experience; however, I worked as a nurse technician for over a year. I know they have nurse techs in Texas. I figured that would make me more marketable but I guess not!

Thanks Bridgette j! :) I'm living in California but am originally from Houston, so I'm thinking about moving back into Texas and am actually more interested in Scott & White because it's near Austin...but I want to keep my options open to other good places to live in Texas. I've also heard good things about Scott & White.

If you don't mind me asking...since you're graduating this May, how soon after you graduate are you able to sit for the exam in Texas? It takes a while for our school to send our transcripts to the BRN so I'm still waiting for my ATT code so I can take the NCLEX. I'm wondering if I should wait before submitting my application.

Our instructor had us complete all of the requirements to take the NCLEX about a month ago so that we would be eligible to take the NCLEX as soon as possible. From my understanding, I should have my ATT a week or 2 after graduation (May 14th!!!) and my GN permit by the end of May/early June. Hopefully! After receiving my ATT, I can schedule a time and place to take my exam, I'm hoping I won't have to wait to long to sit for the exam.

You should submit your application ASAP!! I submitted my application for the job I got on March 31th and I had my interview on April 21th...got the job on the spot and I start orientation June 20th! They seemed more concerned about my GN permit...since I will most likely begin orientation before sitting for the NCLEX. I can work under my GN permit until I take the boards (1st time) and if god forbid I don't pass, I will work as a patient care tech.

My advice is to apply to jobs that were posted a while back, not just the jobs that were posted within the last couple of days. The job I snagged :lol2: was posted in December of 2010! My guess is there wasn't too many applicants applying for that position. I know it's nerve racking but hang in there. I went from no job prospects to four job offers in 2 weeks. Think positive and count on things working out. Good luck!

Wow, your school works really fast! I graduated April 11th and am STILL waiting for my ATT code. Our school finally sent out transcripts at the beginning of this week, so I'm really hoping soon. Thank you so much for all of the good information and encouragement! I think I will go ahead and submit my applications tomorrow. BTW It's awesome that you received so many job offers before graduation!

Wow, Bridgette..your school really does work fast! So, you don't have to do anything else for your school between now and graduation?

And you're right..S&W is more concerned about my GN permit than anything else! I'm having that problem now. While I'm down to start orientation on the 20th as well, I have one more course to take before graduation -- our Leadership course. So, while I took all the standardized testing needed to graduate, I have to finish this course first -- which won't finish until June 9th! I graduate June 15th but while I plan on sending everything in like NOW (already sent for my fingerprinting cards), the only hold up will be the affadavit from my school saying I completed everything for graduation. I'm hoping I can rush that down on the 9th (even though graduation is on the 15th).

Ugh..I'm just so scared that orientation will be pushed back even further and I'll start like a MONTH after my other internship classmates (who will be starting on June 6th)!

Hi Bridgette, wondering...how long did you have to wait before applying for more jobs since the system won't let you apply for more than 3? I totally thought it was one of those systems that only allow you to apply for 3 per application. Thanks for all of your help!

Aww, thank you Rolliepolee! S&W does only allow you to have three applications under the status of "applied", however, once your application shows "route" you can apply for another position. Hope that helps! Good luck and let us know how things go!!!!

As far as I know I have completed everything and am ready for graduation!!! Have you registered for the NCLEX with Pearson Vue yet? Our nursing department head is sending our Affadavits for graduation tomorrow morning and shes says according to a staff member at the Board of Nursing, if we have registered for the NCLEX-RN (paid our $200) before the affadavits are sent, our GN permits should be posted online within 10 business days". However, if the affadivit is sent before a student registers for the NCLEX, the students file will be placed in a holding pattern and will not be reviewed for 30 days. Hope that helps...it's all very confusing to me.

I'm hoping everything works out well for you Lovelymo79! See you in orientation and good luck with your remaining class!

WOW!! Thanks for the tip!!! I didn't know that and I've been stressing over all of this. No, I actually haven't registered for the NCLEX...funds are a bit low. But, I'm getting the fingerprinting done tomorrow (I'm doing TWO cards because I've heard from some people who said that they had to re-do them because the first set weren't good. So, I'm hoping if I do two sets, atleast one will be good!). I'm going to send the application in and the fingerprints and then beg, borrow or steal (well, not literally steal) the $200 to pay for the NCLEX registration. I'll definitely be registered about 2 weeks before I send the affidavit down (which I'm rushing down).

So, I will be registering for NCLEX soon! Thanks again!! Can't wait to meet you in orientation!:nurse: By the way, Temple shouldn't be TOO bad..lol! Have you gotten an apartment yet?

No problem! You can also register with the Texas Board of Nursing (another $139... yeah, I know lol) and go ahead and get the Jurisprudence Exam (easy!) out of the way as well if you want to speed things along! Lol! I'm not too excited about moving to Temple either but I am happy to have a job at such a reputable hospital. I'm originally from the DFW area and I was really hoping to get a job in Dallas. Oh well! I went to Temple last weekend and found an apartment...Pecan Pointe is $710 a month. I'm excited because it's a gorgeous complex and it got pretty good ratings on apartmentratings.com (this is my go to site!) I'm having my lease faxed over tomorrow!!! What about you? Found a place yet?

Yeah..I'm sending in the application with the fingerprints today! I know..$139..but it's better than NJ! If I was staying here, the application for the NJ Board of Nursing is $200! These places are just ridiculous! Don't they know that we are still broke nursing students!! LOL!

Good idea! I should also do the Jurisprudence Exam to get it out of the way! Hopefully, I'll be able to get everything out of the way (application, fingerprints, jurisprudence exam, and NCLEX registration) out of the way in the next 2 weeks. That way, all they will be waiting for is the affidavit. Are you able to check the status online..like what you're missing? I think I did see something like that.

I know it's not Dallas but we'll make Temple fun! lol I did see Pecan Pointe but since I wasn't sure how all my funds would be (still thinking like a broke nursing student..lol), I didn't even contact there. Instead, I'm at Chappell Hill. I heard from a friend who's already at S&W that they were nice and they looked nice on the website. I also checked out apartmentratings.com..lol! And it fared well there. So, while I'm already signed up and ready to move in sight unseen..I'm pretty confident about it. Haven't signed the lease (will do when I move in) but I will see the place when I go in for my physical and turn in my new hire work. If I don't like it then, I'll just sign for a 6 month lease and keep it moving! lol!

Im at Chapel Creek across the street, hehe. Love the one I found.
