3 science classes together

i only took one science class at a time. you have to take all of them by next semester?

IMO you are asking for trouble. Physiology, at least, should be taken by itself. Example: due to several "restarts" over the years, I have had to update and take Physiology three times (thank God never again!). I find it highly coincidental, that each time I took this course (at one university and two community colleges) the instructor, taught it at a very intense level. You could not just "memorize" and regurgitate; on exams you had to write well thought-out essays applying the principles taught. I would end up spending most of my time trying to figure out what was the question, much less writing the answer. And I thought I was well-prepared! Ha! Instructors of science classes required in the nursing curriculum also, more than once, revealed that a weeding out process was occurring. In other words, they admitted that they were not holding everybody's hand to make sure of a 100% pass rate. So, based on anecdotal evidence, please do not place yourself at a disadvantage. Also, some programs use GPA for admissions, etc. When you take all these high power classes together, you are asking for less than your best, even if you can manage to pass. And yes, I did notice, on occasion, that peers who strategically planned their course load (i.e. one heavy duty science class at a time) were more likely to be able to "pull that A". I took Organic Chemistry with A&P II one semester, never mind that i was in my 3rd trimester of pregnancy!!!

Needless to say, I ended up with a C- in Chem and a B- in A&P.

Don't do it if you don't have to.. But if you do, I wish you LOTS OF LUCK!!

I took Anatomy and Physiology and Chemistry at the same time. I also have a husband and child so believe me when I say if I can do it you can too! It's a whole heck of a lot easier if you take them one at a time but if you have no choice you can do it! Good luck!

Oh gosh....I HAVE to take at least 2 science classes a semester if I want to get my prereq's done in two years. Otherwise, my 4 year degree will take about 6 or 7 years. I guess maybe I'm being too ambitous. I just feel like the best I will ever be able to get is an associate's degree, and I'm not saying that that's BAD, but I always wanted more for myself. Now I just feel like I'm setting myself up to fail.

So that makes me feel depressed, but this makes me feel mad: "weeding" students out before they even get to nursing school???? WTF? I understand it's a hard field, but I thought college was for LEARNING the material and training people. Why can't they just do what they were hired to do and TEACH? If students wanted to be treated that way, they would have gone to boot camp. If they are just going to "weed" everybody out, why don't we just shoot the students that didn't graduate with honors in high school or send them off to run cash registers for minimum wage at Kmart for the rest of their lives?

I would say not to do it, if at all possible. You are setting yourself a HUGE challenge. In the logical scheme of things, I would take Micro first, simply because it will help you understand Physiology better.

Hi guys,

It'as just that I need those 3 classes to start my clinicals in the fall. The thing is that my school wants me to take physio during the summer but it's so expensive that I don't feel like taking out a loan for that. I know it's hard but I'm trying to think about how much money I'm gonna owe at the end. Micro is never offered in the summer at my school only physio and physio is a 5 credit classe. Now get this you have to take 6 credits in order to qualify for as loan!!! And that means I have to take a classe not needed 'cause I got all my other requirement already. I have 2 science classes right now prep for chem and asnatomy. The thing that pissed me off is that I could have done it this semester but my advisor back then didn't want me too. Now I found out that half the people at my school are doing it! Not fair I could've done it too!. Now I'm stuck and don't know if I should just take them next semester??? I'm so frustrated. And you can't take physio out side this school... Alot of people have told me they went to a summer school at other colleges and failed miserably because of they way things were set up and they couldn't take the pressure of almost 200 people in as classroom. Help I'm drowning!@

Nursing 101 -

Relax, take a breath, and THINK!

What is your situation? Are you working part/full time or not at all? Do you have kids/husband - what are your comments to school? What are your strong points in school, science, math, etc? How much time a week do you have to devote to studing? Does school generally come easy to you?

You need to look at these factors, then decide if you can handle all 3 science classes. Anything is possible IF you put your mind to it and work hard. If I was in your situation, I would be upset for not having the chance to take a class this semester. And I would probably tackle all 3 classes. They all kind of coincide with each other. Its not like taking trigonometry, pre-calculus & calculus at the same time.

I took Chem and Algebra together, that was tough.. Maybe the sciences will be better together.. I really hope you do well, keep us posted ! :nurse:

Well, are they the only classes you are taking? If so, it may be doable. However, if it is possible to take one of them in the summer you might want to consider that. I can't say much though, I have Pathophisiology and Chemistry this semester and also 9 other hours on top of that. If you do try it, just be sure to keep on top of things. Good Luck!!!

I think 3 sciences may be way too much0-especially if you need to maintain a certain gpa inorder to get into your clinical-sequence. I took A&P one summer which is a 6 wk crash course (instead of the normal 12 wks. I did this because I was in such a rush to complete my pre reqs and enter my clinicals. I ended up passing with a C+ (my lowest grade yet) It was a close call because if you get less than a C you are out. I would never do something like this again.

Are you taking 3 because you are in a hurry to enter your actual Clinicals??? I think it might be a better idea to take only two and maybe an easier class as well. You don't want your hard work to backfire on you??? Think about it!

Good luck with whatever you decide. I am an evening weekend nursing student and single mom w/ a full time job. I couldn't have done it.
