School Stethoscope Suggestions?

Published

Hey guys! I'm starting nursing school in 30 days (*panic*). We've got to buy a dual-head stethoscope before school starts, and I've been looking all over. Found loads and loads on various sites.

Does anyone have suggestions for a good one to start with? What are you using in school, yourselves? Especially if you bought it online, as that's probably what I'll have to do.

So many thanks!

For those of you with the master card, how hard is that to use on peds? I'm stuck between that one and the cardio 3?

Took me a while to figure out what you were saying. I was thinking, "What does my credit card have to do with Peds?" lol

The Master Cardiology II comes with a "Special Procedures Adapter" that allows the user to auscultate from a smaller surface area. Excellent for peds or geriatrics when you have to get between ribs. You can buy all kinds of different adapters for different things.

Nice thing about the adapter is when you keep it on it protects the bell from dings or bumps plus it is also maintains the bell's tunable feature.

LMAO! I didn't notice that! Sorry, lol! Thanks for the info, I'm entering my senior year and I have peds this semester that's why I was thinking of the cardiology 3. But now.....that master card may work, lol!

Littman..... I enjoyed using mine.

I dont believe you dont need a very high class scope for school, but you want some class in it tho everyone tells me that the Classic II S.E. is good which I agree but I am going to get the Card III because i am going to be using through my CNA jobs and RN and NS than i am going to up to a Master Card

I just got an ultrascope from my mom as a 'starting nursing school' present. I love it already! but... how good is it for students and learning? It's a little bulky, so I'm concerned that it might get in the way.

Why do you believe you do not need a good scope? I would argue the most important time to have a good quality scope is when you are a student. When you are learning to differentiate sounds you really need clarity so that you can really hear what the differences are...once you know what you are hearing you can use a paper cup.

Ultrascopes are popular but IMHO novelty items...

The ONLY reason people buy them is because they have cute little colors, designs and sparkles in them.

On the other hand I know Nurses that use cheap-o disposable scopes and love them, I know one that doesn't use a scope at all...but that is not advised.

Have you tried it? The sounds are really loud on mine. My sister who has been a tele nurse for over 20 years has been using one for the last 13 years. She loves it. So is your opinion based on experience or appearance?

Littman Classic II S.E. is the way to go. I wouldn't buy a cardiology unless you plan to go into cardiac or a specialty area where it may be a necessity

Experience.

Like I said I know people who use those cheapo disposable scopes and one guy who doesn't use one at all. Like I also said they are very popular.

If you compare the ultrascope's acoustic strength along with it's clarity and versatility it does not compare to other professional models.

BUT

People do like them.

I remember in school when they gave us those disposable pieces of junk we all used to think WOW these are so loud and clear...after using them a while and being exposed to a variety of scopes I soon came to realize what loud and clear actually meant.

The scope debate makes me always think steak. I meet so many people that say they hate steak. 99% of those people (including my wife) had never eaten a Filet Mignon from Ruth Chris or some other fine steak house. They have all eaten the garbage they sell at Walmart, cooked to a crisp and think that is what steak is...gross. I am sorry but you cannot imagine nor compare a $3-$5 steak to what a $30-$50 steak tastes like until you have tried it lol.

If you are happy with your ultrascope then stick with it, when/if you get tired of it there are many better quality scopes out there...

I would just recommend you to try some of the different scopes whenever you are in the scrub store.

P.S. Ever seen a MD or PA or NP carry an Ultra? Residents don't count lol.

The cardiology series has 0% to do with cardiology, just a brand name.

I personally love the Classic II, own several of them actually. I was satisfied with the classic for years but if you really want quality......

i got one adscope-lite pro and i am going to get the CARD III so I can use both but more likely the adscope
