School nurse and pregnancy

Published

This is my second year as a school nurse for pre-K through 8th grade. Just found out that I am 8 weeks pregnant! (This is probably considered a high risk since I am 41 years old.) Of course I will discuss this with my OB/GYN. But any advice or comments from my school nurse mentors?

Just be grateful you're not pregnant & working in the hospital with all the heavy lifting, long hours, TB, MRSA, C-DIFF... etc!

Of course your OB will advise you about the H1N1 vaccine.

Remember the simple stuff on your busy days... drink lots of water, take lots of bathroom breaks, & eat snacks throughout the day.

Oh- and CoNgRaTuLaTiOnS!!! That is wonderful news!!

I agree with Safari. I was working in the hospital through both of my pregnancies. I think this is a much better environment. Congratulations!!

Congratulations. I am 8 months pregnant and this is my 2nd pregnancy as a school nurse. I always practice good handwashing, got my seasonal and H1N1 vaccines, make sure I eat right (yes, even at work), drink plenty of fluids! I have done just fine. Could not imagine doing this at the hospital and working 12-14 hour shifts!

congratulations, I just came back from my maternity leave! being preggo at school was the best, I always had someone looking out for me, making sure I was drinking and not pushing myself too hard to get my screening and things done. They were so so good to me while I was expecting. :redpinkhe hope things go well for you!!

congratulations!

get these titers tested. when i was pregnant i advised my doc that i was a school nurse and was mostly concerned with fifth disease - so she sent me to get a titer drawn. turned out that my titers were off the charts and there was no fear of me being at with with fifth disease. i worked until the end of the sy (due in july) nd pretty much had no restrictions... though you would have been hard pressed to see me helping with a student that needed restraint or breaking up a fight...

I was a school nurse through two of my pregnancies and was exposed to Fifth Disease several times and never got it. I became a stay at home mom after my second baby was born and three years later when I became pregnant again I somehow contracted Fifth Disease and then passed it onto my other two young children. It was the first case of Fifth Disease during pregnancy my OB had ever seen. Everything turned out fine but my point is you can be exposed to stuff no matter where you work or are so you might as well take your precautions but not worry about it unless it happens. The school system was wonderful to me when I was pregnant. They never blinked when I had to leave a little early for dr appts, sick days, maternity leave, etc. You don't get that in a hospital! Congrats!
