  1. congratulations, I just came back from my maternity leave! being preggo at school was the best, I always had someone looking out for me, making sure I was drinking and not pushing myself too hard to get my screening and things done. They were so so good to me while I was expecting. :redpinkhe hope things go well for you!!
  2. I had a teacher do this to me not long ago, she had sent the child to me twice, I called and spoke to mom both times and she said she wanted the child to stay at school unless they had a fever or symptoms. After I sent the child back to class the teacher ever so politely brings the child to my office and says i will call his mother what is her number, I told her that she could get that on her own since she was the one being the medical professional, and maybe I should go down the hall and teach her class cuz she was doing my job. my principal over heard this from her office and wanted to know what was going on so I told her that I was taking the rest of the day off because the school didn't need my professional medical opinion because the teacher was the one calling the shots. The principal was HOT! so was the teacher, she has not questioned me again.
  3. You will learn that the computer can become your best friend during down time. Also it's a great time to catch up on all the news here. I also find release by getting out of my "cave" (office) and helping one of the secetaries at my school. Or I stroll to the cafeteria, pick up a cup of coffee and check the weather,( I have no windows in my office)
  4. I always take temps on my middle school kids, sometimes it is the only symptom they have, and sometimes it is leading into something else. I use the reuseable ice packs on kids I can trust to return them, and then I take a box of baggies once a week to the cafeteria and fill with ice, keep in my office in the freezer and use them as needed, that way they are already prepared and I only have to do it once a week. It saves a lot of time and if the injury is bad enough, the ice is available immediately. They hold their own Thermometer and I have them pick up their own ice packs, and use that as a assessment tool, are they walking ok, did they wince in pain as they opened the freezer ( hand and arm injuries). As you go on you will find time and stress savers.
  5. Clean, usually germs are everywhere, catch up on documentation, help the office staff. go to all nurses! catch up on the news there. Catch a potty break, call my hubby. take a well needed and deserved break!
  6. I have tried to get my school to purchase these things and I just get laughed at, they buy the basic stuff, band aids. personal products, eye wash etc. I'm asking for things that would make my life easier, like an otoscope, a good stethescope, a shredder so that I don't have to go "borrow" one from another part of the building. As far as the PTA goes, they just supplied the funds for a new security system and an AED for the school. Not that I asked for either. Thanks for your input, I will keep trying, or else I will purchase the things I need and take them with me when I leave the school.
  7. Does anyone out there know of any companies that donate supplies to the school health clinic? I'm in need of several things. Thanks! M
  8. I will remove old band aids and bandages if placed by a parent or the student, evaluate and recommend. I also tell students that if they need more than one band iad during the day, that they need to bring them from home. I have a 1 a day limit on bandaids unless they come off during gym, etc. or are re-injured. And in my area schools, we are not allowed to apply Neopsprin, it contains a medication, and the only way we can apply it is to have a non prescription medication form filled out by the parent and on file for the current year.
  9. parents that you can not get in touch with or will not bring on supplies for their diabetic children, and students that come in and say that mom told me if I got worse to call and she would pick me up ( this is 815) they just arrived at school, just walked off of the school bus, and into my office! Teachers sending me students that need to wash the ink off of their hands and arms, isn't there a restroom where you can wash your hands? PUUULEEZZZ!
  10. I had a studend sent to me by a teacher for coughing, no fever, etc, etc. he called his mon for meds. sent him back to class, teacher sends him back, wants him to stay with me until mom arrives, it was going to be 1 1/2 hours , she don't want him coughing on things in her classroom. When mom finally arrived, The teacher was in my ofice and told the mom to go ahead and take him home she did not want him in her room because he might contaminate her things! kids come to me to borrow pencils and paper, to get sncaks and whatever else they forgot this morning
