I'm in a frustrating situation right now. I love the kids and so many of them need a good, caring nurse. they have very few people in their lives who treat them with kindness & respect, and little access to healthcare.
I had a nervous breakdown in October, due to a lot of factors--school was a big one. I had been begging my administrators to step in and help me control the teachers who were sending students to the clinic for stoopid reasons (papercuts, torn pants, chapped lips, etc.) I was regularly seeing 55-65 students/day. Understand, I have NO diabetics, 3 w/seizure disorders, 2 with ADHD meds, and about 60 known to have asthma (but only about 12 have inhalers at school:no:) It was just so out of control.
So after I went off the deep end for about 6 weeks:imbar, I'm back at work. Seems that the subs managed to see about 25/day. How's that? They just stopped the kids at the door, looked them over (without assessment) and pronounced them fine, back to class. My admin loved that style so much that she insists that I adopt it too. At least she laid down the law with the teachers finally--now I finally have some support for teachers taking care of some minor things that don't need a nurse.
It is not my style to blow kids off and skip assessment. I tried talking to my admin about the responsibilties that my license requires of me. Doesn't care. She comes from a PE & Health background (you know, the "walk it off" mentality) so you know that qualifies her to know my job.
Ack! I'm just trying to manage my moods, give appropriate nursing care, and make my admins happy.
I have already made public my intention to leave at the end of this year. If I can make it that long. ...need...more...drugs...

nice to meet all the other school nurses!
March will make it a year
750 at the school I mainly stay at, 100 at the small high school (working their way to 200), and 25 at the other school (a school for children who have behavioral problems- there is another nurse with mental health who manages their psych meds, and I handle the medical meds/problems)
Three
K-12, mostly 9-12 grade
ADN, starting school in January for my BSN
Not for a while. It'll be 2-3 years before I am eligible to sit for the exam (since it'll take me that long to get my BSN). I like it that way though, so I have a lot of time to prep for the exam.
A diabetic who also was recently dx with cyclic vomiting syndrome- unrelated from the DM, but complicated the diabetes with episodes of hypoglycemia. He's having to go homebound soon b/c he's missing so much time.
My pregnant students (about 6 right now, but starting to see a lot of kids with scares). I am limited in the amt. of education I can do b/c of state laws (abstinence only education), but I if they come in one at a time, I can give them more information about other options. Since I am employeed through public health, I can get them in quicker there as well and know more of those resources. I have two who will hopefully deliver during Christmas break, and a few more during in Feb and March.
8. What do you feel you see most frequently? Headaches, without a doubt. These kids won't eat breakfast. I tell them "You should eat a healthy breakfast, but if all you can eat is cold pizza, then eat that". I go through my "brain needs fuel" speech, make sure they actually have food and time to eat, vision, etc, but the kids don't wake up on time to eat or they're starving b/c "I'm too fat".
Decrease absences, decrease amt. of teen pregnancy
I just did vision and BMI/BMI% for the 9th graders. I am supposed to do them for 1/3/5th graders as well, but since that school is so small, I did all of the students (and it only took 2 hrs).
Paper. We were doing electronic, but the system (the one the school uses for attendance and other stuff) is flawed. There is no way to ensure that no one changes any documentation, and getting stuff to print (if needed for legal reasons) took forever. So back to paper we go. We gave it a try, it didn't work, and if they're able to change things, we may try it again.
