Hi all,
I'm a new grad from Southern California that is preparing to relocate to Fargo for a RN job at Sanford. Just wondering what your guys' opinion is on some things:
-Should I drive my car up to Fargo?
-If so, does ND require me to change license plates?
-Best apartment areas?
Thanks in advance!
Even though I love psych, I ended up picking cardiac. I actually start June 1st.How long were you in ND for? Any decent places to live in the downtown area? I checked out the area via spotcrime.com and saw that it might be a rough neighborhood near Sanford off Broadway. Would you say this is accurate? Where did you live before Fargo?
Thanks in advance for any info you can give, I appreciate it.
I've been in Fargo for a few days now, so far it doesn't really seem that bad of neighborhood. It's usually just quiet, with the occasional kids on bikes/rollerblades, people walking their dogs, and a couple of joggers here and there.
Let me just say that it is a hassle without a car in Fargo. I've been commuting via cab, bus, and walking and while it is not too troublesome, it can make you really long for a car. Getting my license and purchasing a car is on the top of my list right now.
I'm living in Northwood commons, it's nothing spectacular but rent isn't too bad. Right next door is the high pointe complex and they look really nice but substantially more expensive. Another good one is the cityscapes complexes. From the picture I've seen, their apartments look very new and nice but also expensive. However it is located in downtown which is the prime location. There will be more restaurants and I would imagine it is quite safe there.

Were you able to secure an apartment before you got there, or did you visit before and get it before the final move?

Sanford Health is still hiring crazy, so must be still lack of hands, since it is spreading from western North Dakota (Bismarck) to northern Minnesota (Bemidji).
Four major medical centers are located in each of largest cities in MN (1), ND (2) and SD (1), but there are so many clinics and units, of course.
(connection with Good Samaritan Society)
Also there are student internship and nursing residency programs (Bismark and Fargo, ND; Aberdeen and Sioux Falls, SD; Bemidji and Worthington, MN) by Vizient/AACN, as well as new grad job postings.
Weather-wise, well, it's northern Prairie, duh...
If prepared, and survive the first Winter, not too bad. ?

Two weeks orientation every month, (twice a month, I guess) and well organized... except lack of hands... busy busy.
(not managements' faults so far... since not many ppl are committed to far away from large city jobs unless really desperate like me... I hate metropolis so not a problem.)

I didn't live in Fargo, but did visit it. I think it's probably safer than a lot of places. I'm from a big city, so I definitely felt safer in ND than where I live now. Fargo's pretty cool, cute shops and some night life and the rents are cheaper than in other parts of the state. I really miss ND actually. I met some really nice people and I had a very good experience at my job. I really wish I could have stayed longer. The facility I worked at was wonderful. I've heard good things about Sanford also. Make sure you're careful with the winters as it gets extremely cold and you'll need a "winter survival kit" when you drive in the winter. I think you'll have a great experience and might want to stay a while.
