San Jacinto College ADN Fall 2009

Published

Hi everyone. Im wondering if any of you are planning on applying to San Jac ADN program or are in the program?

Lets talk about it here

Melissa,

I was told by someone that we do have a test in Health Assessment on the second day of class, which would be the second Monday, over the first four chapters. I guess we will find out for sure on the 24th! I am ready to get this semester started.

Yeah, that seems to be the rumor floating around. Honestly, not that big of a deal. Do A&P in 5 weeks and you typically have an exam a week. 2 if you're absolutely lucky : p

Please let me know if you all get your schedules, because I was told we had to pay by August the 13th and well it looks like we won't be getting out schedules by that time... I have no idea how they are doing things...

I have also started reading the Fundamentals book and it is pretty interesting, but I haven't memorized anything... How is everyone doing on the reading portion?

I've not received an e-mail, and I've also checked the excel spreadsheet daily. Really, they should get it to us before then, or else waive the late fees because they couldn't fit 120 people into classes. We'll see though.

Yay thanks. that would be really awesome. I'm getting kinda scared about all this stuff that we still have to do before school starts. I usually have my backpack ready to go by now. I'd love to know where you got your books.

Specializes in Oncall Hospice RN.

Well at least in A&P you had more than 1 day to ask for clarification. Supposedly he's not going to have to enough time to cover the chapters because he has to go over procedures.

I did buy a carrier for my books yesterday at Ross for only $25. Did anyone order the Nurse Act yet? I ordered the annotated version so I hope it's the correct version. So far I've received 5 of the books that I oredered on Amazon. I had a math anxiety nightmare the day the Math for Meds arrived.

So I guess we're all going to show up at 7:45 am so we don't get locked out of class?

Ugh, I have the Nurse Practice Act book. It's not even a book, just goes over a bunch of the codes that nearly put me to sleep at orientation. I don't think you should worry about the version you have.

Alissan, I'll go find my list and type up each book for ya on here. Also will give others a chance to see and find books on the cheap that they may not have. So give me a few minutes/hours : D

I'll show up at 7 because I'm paranoid about being early ANYWHERE. Just me though. . .

so you guys are saying a test on the 2nd day of class which is the next monday, so we only have health assessment once a week? lol. i'm confused.

and melissa, how are you finding out what our schedules are like anyways? i guess when we split up, they didn't go over that in our group, ha ha. oh well.

and to see if our schedule comes up, do we go to

course schedules under ADN Fall 2009?

Yes, we have health assessment on Monday, foundations tuesday, wednesday, thursday, and friday.

They wrote the schedules on the board, and you can also see by going to the program on the San Jac website and looking up the appropriate class.

I've been using RNSG-ADN-->Course Schedules, because that's the one they made us bring up when we did the little computer thing at orientation.

so on monday, we just need to bring our health assessment book and a binder or something? i mean, i dont know what all books we need to bring.. i don't wanna leave anything behind! and i haven't even started reading out of it.. maybe i should.. ? lol

That's a good question. I'd probably just bring the book and a notebook. It's really going to be an orientation to the class, and we've been told my other students that they really don't do much in the way of teaching on the first day for the assessment class.

And I would definitely advise you read the first 4 chapters of the assessment book. Again, multiple students have said that there is usually a test on the second day of assessment class over those chapters. Not sure if we'll get that, but better to be safe than sorry.

1) Mosby's Medical, Nursing, and Allied Health Dictionary (7th Edition)--Amazon.com $33.05 (This is the 8th or 9th edition, so it's newer than the one they have listed)

2) Medical-Surgical Nursing: Assessment and Management of Clinical Problems (7th Edition)--Amazon.com $98.99 or San Jac $101.35 (One of the few that I could not find a good deal for. I bought mine, the 6th edition, for 10 bucks. We're supposed to have the 7th, so...)

3) Mosby's Manual of Diagnostic and Laboratory Tests (3rd Edition)--SJC $40.50 (This is the used price. New it's $54. Another one of those couldn't find a better deal myself)

4) Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th Edition)--Majors Bookstore ~$29 (Try to find an old used version of this. It's how to write papers in the APA style. I feel like this is a waste of money.)

5) Nurse's Drug Guide 2009 (9th Edition)--Amazon.com $18.30 Used (I got the 2010 edition for $43 at Majors. Just wanted my book. Definitely do Amazon for this one.)

6) Nursing Diagnosis Handbook (8th Edition)--SJC $40.50 or Amazon.com $42.70

7) Math for Meds (10th Edition)--Amazon.com $54.82

8)Nurse Practice Act for Texas--SJC $10.95

9) I-Clicker--Amazon.com $31.10

10) Fundamentals of Nursing Package (8th ed)--This one is a mandatory buy at San Jac apparently. You have to get it new, and for me it was $143.80.

11) Health Assessment in Nursing (3rd ed)--Also got at San Jac for $91.60. Probably could have gotten a better deal somewhere else.

12) Nurse's Handbook of Health Assessment--This looks like the Assessment book. I've priced it at Amazon for $17.72 used.

So that's everything from the syllabus. I'm 99% sure it's accurate because I went over all 4 syllabuses when I made up my list of books. Also, one thing to note. Even though I have the editions listed, general rule of thumb should be get the newest one if possible. Never hurts to keep that in mind when shopping.

So total, is about $610 dollars. Still a large sum of money, but less than $900! If you get the Health Assessment for less than the $90 you can easily bring that total down under $600. But there you go. Let me know if this is confusing and I'll try to explain it better : )

I was told in an email today from the ADN dept that they should have schedules posted tomorrow. YAY, so if that really happens we can register and pay on time.

Awesome! Thanks for posting that. You've single-handedly given us all a reason to breathe a sigh of relief, if they post the schedules that is : )
