Samuel Merritt ABSN 2010 San Mateo

Published

Hi all,

I noticed threads for other Samuel Merritt campuses and semesters but not the ABSN program that starts January 2010 in San Mateo. I was a little discouraged to read all of the frustrations of the San Francisco campus for fall. San Mateo is my #1 choice and it was only between that and Sac for winter semester. I'm wondering if there is anyone else who applied for 2010 in either campus. From what I gathered from other posts it takes about 3-4 months to get a reply? Its gonna be a looong wait! Who's waiting with me?

Do you think it will be very impacted?

With Regards..

Mascli- some of the ABSN students Sac cohort were notified of early acceptance on Friday (14 people). The rest of the class (there will be 32 in the class) will find out next week if they got in or waitlisted. The ELMSN students that were accepted and waitlisted for Sac found out on Friday as well.

were people notified by a phone call, emial, or did they receive an acceptance letter in the mail?

Acceptances and waitlists are notified by phone call and denials are by mail. This was just Sacramento the other campuses have probably not been done yet.

Hi, I was wondering when they let the San Mateo applicants for the ABSN know? Should I email the admissions office or call them? Thanks

so would you guys say that if you don't get a phone call from SMU by Wednesday, then your pretty much rejected?

Hana- I would just wait it out. Having a bunch of people contact admissions is not going to speed up your wait. It's going to take as long as it takes.

Dave- I wouldn't assume that you've been denied if you don't get a call by next Wednesday. This school seems to work at it's own pace and even though Liza said that the ABSN program will be determined by next week that that doesn't really mean it will be. Especially if you're waiting to see if you got into another campus other than Sac. Who knows what progress they've made in their selection process. You just pretty much have to wait, even though it's frustrating.

I wouldn't expect SMU to be that timely about notifying everybody, assuming no one from San Mateo has found out yet. I'm hoping they are notifying Sac. students first and thats why none of us has heard. Given the pricey tuition the first 5-10 people on the wait list probably have a really good shot. Who knows if everyone will even be able to pay! It could take a while before everyone is notified.

I noticed there has been 2-6 people reading this and the Sac. threads all weekend everytime I checked them (which I checked nonstop btw) i'll have my fingers crossed for all of us this week! Good Luck guys!

Hi Guys,

I am a Sac ABSN student at SMU, being pinned and graduating on December 10th! Yahoo!

Just so you know up front....it is going to be a crazy, wild ride. It is not even possible to put it into words. Not just because of the pace, but because things can change at the last minute with the hospitals, etc.

Do NOT count yourself out if you haven't been accepted by Wednesday! Not until you get a rejection letter. I was an early acceptance person, but we had people accepted at the end of December!

Prayers are with you - I know how stressful the waiting is.

elle- I totally agree with you. Just because Sac found out already doesn't mean they've even figured out San Mateos. I am just like you checking this site all the time for any updates.

BetsyBeans- thanks for the info and advice. It's always good to hear from someone who's actually going through it. Are you glad you chose to go to SMU now that you're almost done?

Hi 2BGr8Nurse:

YES! I would choose this program all over again. For ABSN students, the nurses repeatedly tell us and our instructors that they are so glad we are there, that we are so helpful, that we are much more eager to learn than students from other schools, etc. Of course some nurses think this program is ridiculous and you cannot actually do nursing school in 1 year, but that is your chance to educate them on your school! You already have at least a BA, maybe a MA too (I do!). You have already completed pre-requisites that are often PART of nursing school (pharmacology and pathophysiology). You do not get spring break, summer break, etc. When you do have a "break" between terms, they are handing you assignments as you walk out the door that are due on your first day back - so much for that break you thought you were going to have! 90% of the time, the nurses are happy to see the SMU students walking down the hall, looking like a group of French Pastry Chefs in their all-white-uniforms! Part of this has to do with SMU and part has to do with the kind of student that applies to this program. There is no other program in the nation that is faster paced. You just run the entire time. I have learned so much, and yet feel like I still have not absorbed it. The thing is, I am seeing that from people on this site who are in traditional programs too. In a way, we are all in the same boat. We are the crazy ones that give up a full year of our lives, but then we gain our lives back so much more quickly and start working the compassionate/intellectually challenging profession we have been dreaming about and earning money!!!!

Thanks for all the information. I am, waiting to hear back from SMU for San Mateo, and the wait is killing me.....I hope we hear something soon.

BetsyBeans- thanks for your post about being an SMU student. That really helps reaffirm my desire to go to this school even with the cost that comes with it. It really sounds to me like the best of the best for Nursing programs. Hopefully we will soon know if we are lucky enough to look like French Pastry Chefs.
