Samuel Merritt ABSN 2010 San Mateo

Published

Hi all,

I noticed threads for other Samuel Merritt campuses and semesters but not the ABSN program that starts January 2010 in San Mateo. I was a little discouraged to read all of the frustrations of the San Francisco campus for fall. San Mateo is my #1 choice and it was only between that and Sac for winter semester. I'm wondering if there is anyone else who applied for 2010 in either campus. From what I gathered from other posts it takes about 3-4 months to get a reply? Its gonna be a looong wait! Who's waiting with me?

Do you think it will be very impacted?

With Regards..

I was told that I am on the waiting list, but they have still not determined my number in the sequence. If #3 has been chosen, #12 has been chosen and #24 has a spot, then wouldn't it make sense that they've already picked the first 25 or so, and I'm probably at the very end of the waitlist? It just doesn't make sense that they'd randomly pick spots on the waitlist anywhere from 1 to 24 without choosing all the spots between 1 and 24.

Does anybody know how long the wait list is suppose to be? I had thought it was 25 spots, but then I read a previous post that said that in the past they had picked 40 spots! (I just want to know if I'm even in the game....:scrying:)

I agree with elle I have no idea why they picked me. I don't know if its a formula but I am a hispanic male with a biology degree. I got two pretty good recomendation letters one my professor/RN, and another from a veterinarian who is my boss in biotech. I also put in my letter that i'm a volunteer ski partoller so I have first responers experince and was a bartender through college so I have good customer service skills.I never figured out my GPAs but think my prereqs were about 3.6-3.7, my last 90 units were probably only 3.4 or so, and my NET score was a 93. My stats were not as impressive as others, but they may not be just looking at stats maybe the letters and recommenations count for more then we know.

If they are using some kind of formula, it goes something like that. It can't be entirely formula based though since only 10% of the class is male. It seems to me they would be trying to increase that percentage if they were shooting for equal representation and I can speak from personal experience that they don't just let your application through because you have a Y chromosome. I'm not sure what everyone else's situation is, but I was actually waitlisted #16 in the SF program as I was completing my prereqs. I think is possible that if you continue to apply to Samuel Merritt, your application is considered a little more highly each time you apply to another program. I think keeping your name in the system for long enough can help. Also, I tend to think they prefer people who are done with or almost done with their prereqs.

Regardless, I took the TEAS when I was unhappy with my NET score and scored much more highly. Additionally, I kept my prereq GPA high and stayed involved with health related volunteer activies (Red Cross CPR/First Aid Instructor). Also, I made an effort to get to know my professors in the classes I liked and got a good letter of recommendation from her. I believe the website says something about SMU prefering letters from your teachers. I my case I included one from my prof and another from my former boss.

So, for those trying to get in, I think two things are key:

1) Persistance

2) Demonstrating an interest in health care

For those on the waitlist or who were denied, but keep at it. The last year and half of working towards getting into nursing school has been the most frusterating of my life, but there is a pay out at the end of it. Best of luck and congrats once again to those who got in this time round.

Hi, I didn't receive a phone call or an email so should i be expecting a rejection letter in the mail?? Should I call to see if I got accepted or no? Thanks

Since i am waitlisted, i have the opportunity to reapply but simply paying another application fee....Does anyone really know for sure that being waitlisted guarantees a spot in the next cohorts?... And also, i have a feeling that if i would have put "Hispanic" on my application, it would have given me enough of an edge to get in, or at least be higher than #24 on the waitlist. Im filipino with 1/4 spanish blood in me...my last name sounds hispanic as well... If i just lie and say that im 100% hispanic, u think they would know?

What do you mean that in the past they picked 40 spots?...like they actually took 40 wait listed people into the program? If thats the case, then oh my!...i may have a shot (#24)

Being #16 on the waitlist at SF got u in the program? What do you think of me being 24?

HandSome Dave

I don't know if you remember the guy who sent us the e-mail about the San Francisco cohort by mistake. I asked him and he was waitlisted #10. He got notified in August and I think they're up to #18 for the San Francisco cohort. Don't give up. A lot can happen! Also, I believe Samuel Merritt will role over your application without requiring another application fee. I would aim for the Spring cohorts and hope for the best on the San Mateo one!

Congrats on getting in!!!! I was rejected for this cohor  Do you mind sharing what you have done differently this time around and what are your stats.... Thanks!

I took two online classes over the summer to improve my last 60 unit gpa and finished pharmacology which was the last prerequisite that I needed to complete. My overall gpa was only a little over a 3.0 but I think I got in because I've completed all the prerequisites and my science gpa is high. My NET score was 93 which also helped. I also took a CNA course over the summer to get some healthcare experience. I was reallly discouraged last March when I found out I didn't get in, so I know how you feel. Don't give up, I think that if you keep reapplying and showing them that you are trying to improve your stats as much as possible you will get in:)

@Dave: I got waitlisted for the SF program, but I got into the San Mateo program outright.

I think your chances at 24 are limited, but not impossible. You aren't going to hear until very close to the start date of the program though.

So to chip in on my situation as someone who was accepted into the program: I am not really sure why I was chosen over other well qualified applicants but my last 60 gpa was around 3.4, science and prereq gpa 4.0 and 90 on the NET (I took the NET instead of the TEAs because I originally applied for SF cohort). The major difference in my application was that I originally applied with many prereqs planned or in progress (with a very ambitious timeline to complete them), but this time around all my prereqs were done. I had experience volunteering with an HIV/AIDS service organization as well as having trained as an EMT, though I never got the chance to be employed as so. My bachelors degree was in Social Work from a very competative Canadian University, though my undergrad gpa was only 3.0. I was teaching briefly before pursuing nursing and I speak conversational Spanish. Demographics should have worked against me as I am young (24), female and white. I think my reccomendations kicked butt and were from excellent sources, so that may have helped. I hope this helps, I really do think they put a lot of weight into being finished with prereqs... I heard that a lot of people who had courses in progress were also rejected from November SF. Good luck to all those that have been waitlisted, and to those who got rejected, take my story as encouragement to try again! Who knows, maybe they even view the apps of those that keep on trying as more determined and favorable. To those who are accepted, I can't wait to meet you, It'll go fast, but I know that we can make it fun!

Hello everyone! So, I fall into the "undetermined sequence number" waitlist category for the San Mateo Spring 2010 cohort. I followed up with SMU today and was told that in order to apply for next cohort (deadline: November 1) I just submit the SMU application and fee. The rest of my file (transcripts, LOR's, essay) will be borrowed for review for the new cohort. And I can cancel my applicaton if I am accepted for Spring 2010 via the waitlist. I still was not notified of my sequence number. Has anyone else in my boat been given a sequence number?

I plan to resubmit my application but am worried that I may be in the same boat next cohort since its too late to improve my package at this point. I have finished my prereqs, cannot take the TEAS again before the deadline, etc. Has anyone been accepted with the same exact package after being waitlisted for a previous cohort? Any advice or suggestions are appreciated. I'm hoping for the best and plan to keep applying until I am accepted :)
