Hi I have been hospitalized for 2 weeks after a grueling gallbladder surgery, it was not done laporascopic. However I have a huge incision right from my epigastric region all the way past my navel to just above the pubic hair line. I missed two midterms while I was hospitalized. And the Dean of nursing said that I cannot write the exam.
I honestly don't think I will be able to pass. I feel like I am drowning. Please I need some friendly advice. Should I leave the program, and reapply? What would my chances be of getting in? I am a student that does homework religiously as well as rarely missed school.
What do you think of my situation?
I think there is a big difference between one person having a schedule conflict on adate that was previously not occupied with school and your situation in which you missed substantial lecture time and 2 exams, sorry if this seems harsh but I really think you should consider and possibly heed the advice that has been echoed by several other posters, talk to you Dean or Director, only they can give you the answers even if they aren't the ones you want
Based upon what you stated happened to you versus how the other student was treated, it sounds as if you have the basis for a grievance. You should have asked for a medical leave of absence. Since you decided to continue on, now you have to live with the consequences or take up a battle with the school. You just might win. Please go talk to someone at your school who can advise you on the procedures to protest your treatment. Does your school have a student grievance committee? Hope that whatever you decide to do, that you don't end up out of school with a record of dismissal for academic failure.
You missed the point of what I was saying (and I do not think you have evidence for a grievance). That instructor moved an exam from the date on the syllabus. If someone in the class had a problem with the new date, since she had planned her life around having an exam on the 6th, the instructor was required to accomodate her. You didn't have that problem, unless they moved exams TO the dates you had planned to be out for surgery. At least at schools in the states, they aren't allowed to just move dates on things on a whim. Many students work or have other commitments outside of school, so they can't just move exam dates in the middle of a semester.
No one objected but one person, they said that they could not be there for the exam. The instructor excused her from the exam and is letting her write it on a saturday,do you feel this is fair, should I acknowledge her about it? What should I do?
I feel that this has a bit to do with favoritism, and feel like she has set me up for failure, while the other girl get a chance to pass.
I hardly see this as favoritism. The teacher moved the class to accommodate someone else, not her, so now she needed to accommodate the one person who was inconvenienced by it.
You have missed two weeks of school, assuming theory and clinical. In my school, you would have been overcut, and failed due to excessive absences. And you do realize, your doc will not clear you to go back to clinical right away, even if you could sit in on lectures. You had major abdominal surgery. How will you physically handle clinical!
It is very unfortunate that this happened to you, but this is no one fault. It just happened. You need to be in class to pass, you need to be there to learn the material.
As everyone else has said, you need to take a medical leave of absence. I get this feeling that you do not know the specifics of taking a leave. No school would deny you a LOA for major surgery. If they did, this is not a school you want to be in, and I'm sure another school would gladly accept you. It's not like you failed, this was completely out of your hands!!!
And did you say another program would NOT begin until 2011! What kind of school is this!!!
so are you saying that i should withdraw from the program? another program does not start up until 2011 at the school where i am attending now, and it is a really good school and hate to apply elsewhere? is that what you mean by a leave of absence?
you wouldn't be withdrawing the program, just that particular semester. i don't think any school would let you make up work after being gone that long. you just need to retake that particular semester. i had to re-do a semester. it was darned frustrating, but helpful in the long run. it's really not worth stressing over. i agree, that the most important thing is your health. try to relax, and heal, and start the semester over in the fall. when you have your rn, one semester later, it won't really matter. hang in there! heather

the whole class did not agree to change the date. The girl that cannot be there on the schedualed exam date, gets to write on a saturday/ Just a bit confused
