Rules for Nursing School

Nursing Students General Students

Published

Following on from the other "Rules" Threads:

1. Turn off your mobile phone, if it absolutely must be on, let the lecturer know and keep it on the lowest possible volume or on silent (it is a rule at my school if your phone goes off you owe the lecturer chocolate or alcohol depending on the lecturers preference)

2. If you are a new student don't act like you know more than the students who have been there for longer (unless of course you do)

3. If the course has an online group and you can read previous questions, do not ask the same question again and again, the lecturer and other people will get sick of answering the same question 5 or 6 or even 7 times (you will be notified if the answer is different)

4. If you tell someone something it's bound to get around to other people so be careful what you tell people (Rumours spread extremely fast)

5. Be polite to your lecturers and respect them for who they are (They are the ones marking your assignments, and I'm afraid they know a lot more than you do presently)

6. If you have a story you are willing to share related to the current topic by all means share it but if it's not related forget it

7. Don't constantly complain about the number of hours you have to attend campus or how long it takes to do your assignments or how much study you need to do or how many readings you have, everyone is in the same boat and if you keep doing that you are likely to get offside with other students.

DO keep in mind you will be going through this with the same group of people for at least 2 years (depending on your degree)....these folks will be your clinical mates, your group mates, your lab partners, etc., for this period of time and the better and sooner you learn to "play nice", the easier it will be for all.

I'm not advocating becoming a doormat, but avoid the cliques and games that I understand is played in some schools. Thank heavens we don't have that problem, but you MAY need some of these folks one day...

I read that story on the ipod cheating. I opened it up becuase the header said something like "Ipods enable cheating" and thought it meant spouses cheating!! I had a friend not too long ago whose hubby had a breakdown and thought she was getting secret messages from her 'secret lover' (who did not exist) on her Ipod and stole it from her! When I saw the headline, I thought, oh gosh- maybe wasn't really crazy but on to something!!

If you did not study, or read the assignment before the test, and you actually did well on the test, DO NOT tell everyone "oh, I didn't even study last night, and I got a 9?" It tends to make those of us who did study a little mad! :angryfire And it tends to show disrespect to the teacher.

the nursing instructors insist you don't even bring your phone to class. if you do, and are caught, 1-2 points are removed from your next test score.

that's just not right. i'm a mother of 4 kids while in nursings school. i have a child at home with cp and a feeding tube. she has also a coupe of seizures and in reality is at risk for developing a seizure disorder because of the cp and a possible family history. there's no way i would make myself unable to be contacted for 3 hours. i keep my cell phone in my pocket in clinicals on vibrate. i can't expect my husband to call the hospital, ask for the right floor while in a panic is something happens.

about a year ago she was barely breathing and had to be rushed to the er...he doesn't handle this stuff well.

i don't leave it on ring and i won't answer it in class...but that's really unfair to make that kind of rule especially with that kind of punishment.

I suspect this behavior is a bit of psychological warfare. The student is probably under reporting their study time in order to make you think they are so much smarter than you that you cannot possibly compete.

1. do your best to get ahead of assigned material. It will pay off tenfold when the end of the semseter nears.

2. Be polite to others in lecture...don't whisper and talk while the instructor is trying to disseminate info. It's rude and distracting.

3. Take advantage of study groups, if it fits into your learning style. You'd be amazed at what little nuggets you'll retain just by remembering it when your group studied that material.

4. Create acronyms for as much as you can that means something to you. Example: Sims' position is best for administration of an enema: SIMS means Stop Invading My Space! :D

5. Above all, devote the proper time and attention to school and you'll be rewarded.

Here's an odd one but here goes, if you don't like your clinical placement, do not go to the teacher and try to switch it with a student who has the placement you want, (without informing the student). Maybe that student has the placement because they worked harder, and didn't cause any trouble with other students or teachers.

Here I go again, one last pet peeve, don't try to figure out people's student numbers so you can see their marks. Please mind your own business.

Aside from all of these mentioned...... Don't be late, go to school with mind- set and always be prepared for a pre-test!

I really don't care if you sleep through class, text message through class, or don't show up at all.

DON'T be in back of the class chatting with your neighbor and disturbing me so I can't concentrate on the lecture.

Chances are you who do this don't really give darn about the class, you're not paying for it out of pocket.

I AM- and I pay out of district prices which means I'm paying $110/credit hour instead of your measly $39/CH. I also pay more in FEES for all kinds of garbage I'll never ever use. I've got 2 kids in college, and we are not elgible for financial aid.

Just wanna get my pre reqs done in peace and continue the education I began 30 years ago

pffft BE QUIET OR LEAVE

If you are a transfer student or a LPN joining our class half way through the program please be quiet. No one wants to hear a patient story every 5 minutes during lecture. No one wants to hear you say how school is easier for you since you are already a nurse. No I dont need your help for the 100th time when I never asked for it in the first place. You are now at the same level with us, join the group!
