The nursing industry has really shot itself in the foot in california if you ask me. After years of importing nurses and passing less than stellar nurses what we have now is an assess of new grads who will may have to relocate out of state to areas like the midwest and texas to find work. The numbers of new grads applying for a handful of newgrads position is just mind numbing and i suspect this coming year will be even worst as the new batch graduates competing previous new grads who are still without acute care experience. I wish you guys the bests. I wonder if the east coast is the same.
California is probably worst than say Midwest where things are tough but there still a demand much like there's a shortage of MD. I've had students who had to move to vegas to get a job. The less than stellar comment about nurses aboard was not meant to inflame there are some high quality nureses, but you cannot expect the same dtandard of practices from non 1st world countries because the cost associated it Some of the schools are like paper mills, do you need to go to nursing school to pass the boards, you don't. Nclex does not test everything you learned in nursing school and the test are different. When the BRN voids an entire nclex results for a country because of cheating it's a problem . I don't know what they do at your hospital, but we orient nurses from overseas on how things are done in us hospital before they start a new grad program. The recent changes to the nclex was a result of increase errors by new grads and nurses aboard.

Who was cheating and how?? When I took my exam the finger printed you when you went in and if you went out to use the bathroom. There were cameras right there in the room taping everyone.

I believe this was a reference to a scandal a couple years (?) ago in the Phillipines, regarding their national licensure exam (not the NCLEX).
I think things on the East coast are equally bad. I hear of new grads having greatdifficulty finding jobs in the New England states, Jersey, and New York too. I passed boards in June but I didn't actively start looking until September and so far I have only received one offer for an interview in HH as an LPN.
I won't even touch the HH one because I have an RN license and will be held to that standard.
The only other thing I have in the works is an RN position in substance abuse. One of the NM at my current LPN job is a NM at the place and has promised me the spot. Nepotism or networking? Call it what you want but she knows my work ethic and is willing to gamble on me.
I went to nursing school because I wanted to work in acute care but it doesn't seem like that is going to happen for me.
Oh well, I gotta get my foot in the door somehow and maybe it will be something I love....I'm willing to take anything that will let me use my RN license.
I feel really bad for the upcoming Dec grads because it doesn't look like things are going to be better for them.
There are cycles in the nursing field. The summer before I graduated( I graduated in Dec a long time ago) I went to the hospital I have worked at for over 20 years inquiring about jobs. I was basically told they rarely hire new grads unless they have had preceptorship there. Five months roll on by and my friend and i both got hired there as well as many new grads the next year or so. Then in 1992 they were going to have layoffs at least one person on the chopping block sold her house and was looking to move and guess what they cancelled the layoffs, they needed nurses again.
Now the economy wasn't like it is now, so this downturn may last longer. Also the anticipated need of nurses because of many nurses retiring may not have happened as a lot of people have had to work longer due to the poor economy. They may have lost a lot of retirement income due to the financial crisis.
Yup things are just as bad on the east coast and in New York. Things will get better after the baby boomers retire.
I'm NEVER going to retire!!! Mwa-ha-haaaaa Just kidding.
But seriously, don't be discouraged. Things will turn around . . . I would encourage everybody of one thing-- and that is, if for some reason you take a job outside the profession, do not let the license lapse! Pay the darn fees. I am so glad I did, an unexpected crisis forced me to go back to work, and in California all I needed was my CEUs and I was good to go. Did that online. If I'd had to go through the NCLEX (board exam) again it would have been 10x worse.
Both the import of nurses and passing many students who were not going to be good nurses are in large part to blame for the recent crisis. Hospitals can now afford to be overly picky picking BS students and students currently working in hospitals. The BRN is partly to blame for their policies. Yup 18 to 22 for new grads in southern California in the inland empire, my students are having to drive. 1.5 hour to find an 18 dollar total care nursing job in an accute hospital! I hope the nursing realize this an act accordingly. Does anyone have an idea of the % of nurses out there that are close to retiring age.
Are you suggesting that only nurses who made straight As should have been allowed to graduate, they are what you consider "stellar nurses":angryfire? Sorry but based on your biases I feel it is totally worthless to respnd any further.
