Reapplying for a job

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I an reapplying for a job with a company I used to work for and I could use some advice. I did not leave by choice. It was my first nursing job and I made some mistakes. It was a very challenging and poorly run unit with a high turnover. I had not yet learned how to manage my stress and I got burned out. I worked there about 2 and a half years and have been gone for more than 5 years.

My question is how do I best discuss this in an interview? I would very much like to work for this company again. At the time, I was frequently 5 to 7 minutes late. I no longer have that problem. I have been at my current job about 2 and a half years and have been late maybe once or twice. The reason I was let go from that job was for the lateness and I got into an argument with another nurse in a common area. I have matured a lot since then and I've grown exponentially as a nurse.

Advice would be appreciated from anyone that has experienced this or any hiring managers that may have some input. I want to be honest but I also want to have a chance.

Well, you have a lot of nerve ...I'll give you that. I read your old post and you make the place sound positively miserable. Considering that and the fact that they fired you, why would you even want to go back?

If you don't have anything positive or helpful to contribute, why bother responding?

They are sure to take you back. I'm surprised that they haven't already contacted you. I can see how much you've grown and how mature you are, and I know that they will see it too.

The unit is probably well-run now ...and everyone who works there probably loves everyone else. If you let them know that you have love in your heart as well, that should be explanation enough for any decent person.

Is that better?

Are you even eligible for rehire? When terminated for cause generally one is ineligible for rehire, you may want to consider other employment options as the odds are you may not make it past application screening. This is reality.

They have already called me for multiple interviews. Thank you for your input.

Just because you are getting interviews, it does not necessarily mean you are eligible for rehire. The managers may just be unaware of your history at the facility, that would come out in a background check.

I would discuss this straight up with HR , before I wasted any more time on interviews.

I don't understand how this isn't a helpful question. I too am curious as to why you would want to go back. If you really didn't like the floor and it was volatile with a huge turn-over what makes you think the organization has changed? I too would recommend contacting HR before you go any further with the hiring process and just make sure you are not on an "ineligible for rehire" list. Be very transparent with them. Tell them that you used to work for the company, but left however many years ago and want to double check that you're eligible for rehire before you get further along. I know people who have had offers rescinded (gotten THAT FAR) in the process because it took that long for management to realize they were ineligible for rehire.

Not meaning to start a war or anything, but I also urge you to examine why it was that you took offense to SourLemon's comment. I didn't detect any rudeness or offense in the post. I would also, in a completely objective way, say you had some guts reapplying to a place that fired you (which, honestly doesn't usually work out well) and truly want to know why you would like to go back if you hated it so much. I've work at some doozies before. One place I quit for a variety of reasons including because I thought a firing might be on the horizon and I would NEVER want to go back. Even though it's been almost 10 years since I worked there. Why do you want to go back to a place that your prior posts seem to indicate you hated? Just wondering.

Best of luck.

If you were fired I'm not sure they would even interview you or hire you. I would move on, if I were you.

Sitting down to this thread with a sandwich and a Diet Coke

What does "frequently" late mean? I was smacked on the hand after clocking in 2 minutes late one time at my job. "Frequently" would not be tolerated. Just be ready for them to ask you about this, and what are you doing to make sure it NEVER happens again? They may ask very direct questions in the interview and you cannot lose your cool and snipe at them. Best of luck to you.

That was my first job and I was burned out. I have changed a lot since then. I really did enjoy working for the company and am looking at a different position at a different hospital.

Sour Lemon came across as exactly what his or her name suggests. That is the type of passive aggressive nastiness that I am dismayed is so rampant in nursing. Maybe I misconstrued it. However the follow-up comment suggests otherwise.

Thank you for your thoughtful response.

Realism isn't always positive.
