Realistic starting pay for RN's in N FL?

U.S.A. Florida

What can I expect realistically when I graduate? I have heard a huge range from starting at $15/hour to starting at over $30.

I think in our area (Tampa-Clearwater), you'd probably range from $17-19/hr. not counting shift differentials or weekend differentials.

If you want to start out making a little more, get thee to a specialty unit, like Tele or ICU. Med-surg is great fun for those with lots of energy, like variety, and don't mind taking lots of patients, but you won't make any money for your trouble.

Where in Florida?

Miami pays significantly more than Central Florida or the Panhandle. Large Cities pay more than small. NonProfit pays more than Forprofit. MD offices pay poorly, unless chemo/rad etc.

As a general rule, Florida pays poorly across the board. I have not heard of anywhere in the state that pays new grads $30.00, and few experienced nurses that are nonAgency make that, in central Florida.

Please research past Threads. Florida was listed in the informal "Salary Hall Of Shame" as the worst paying state.

The other thing you have to remember is there is no state income tax in Florida- my recruiter told me take about 10% of what I make now to be able to compare salarys. IE $25.00 here is $22.50 there.

Rj:rolleyes:

I'm in Panama City and starting pay for the entire panhandle is about the same (based on a May recruiting fair with reps from Pensacola, Tallahassee, a couple of smaller other hospitals in the panhandle, Dothan and Mobile Alabama and our three hospitals locally).

A starting RN is $16/hr. Differentials are available, of course, and my hospital gives me an extra 17% of salary for non-benefit status (retired military). As a rule, I guess, salary increases are far and few between (talking to coworkers) and are really market competition driven.

While a few years ago, one might find that a fair wage, the cost of living here (real estate value, insurance costs, taxes, etc) has increased probably 30 to 40% in the past two years while wages have remained flat. Hope this helps

Starting GN / RN pay in Ocala is about 17 - 18 an hour, nurses make more money to drive to Gaineseville (Alachua County) and work at Shands at UF, or Shands at AGH, or North Florida REgional.. they are all 3 better paying than in Ocala (Marion County)

The drive to Gainesville is only about 30 - 40 minutes and many choose to work there instead of locally.

Starting pay is low here in NE Florida..you are probably looking at 16 or 17/hr. working for the hospitals but up to 30-35/hr if you go agency.

I was just offered 17.10/Hour by a hospital in the panhandle area.

Thats after three years ICU experience, formal ICU training, and about a year casual ER experience-

I posted this in the Alabama forum as well.

According to www.salary.com RN's can make:

Minneapolis 49,000-56,000. Thats 26.00/hour on the low end. This is about right as I have worked there. This was staff pay BTW not agency or travel.

Mobile 44,000-50,000 for 23.00/hour low end.

Pensacola 43,000-49,000 for 23.00/hour.

Orlando 46,000-52,000 for 24.00/hour.

I based these figures on a 36 hour work week according to what I made in minneapolis not including over time etc. I dont how this website came to their figures.

I hope it gets better than that-

At the hospital I work at in the panhandle, RNs who sign up to work all weekends get $30/hour. This is close to double what new hires get during the rest of the week.

I guess thats basically a Baylor program.

Thats nice but I cant work every weekend nor would I want to for personal reasons-
