What can I expect realistically when I graduate? I have heard a huge range from starting at $15/hour to starting at over $30.
Is it TMH or the other Community hospital in Tallahassee that pays $30 hr for weekend nurses? How much experience, specialty, etc?
TMH. I know a new grad (graduated last fall) who is working weekends in one of the ICU's and makes about $30/hour. Not sure if the rate is the same for floor nurses. I don't know what CRMC is paying (the other hospital in Tallahassee).
The other thing you have to remember is there is no state income tax in Florida- my recruiter told me take about 10% of what I make now to be able to compare salarys. IE $25.00 here is $22.50 there.Rj:rolleyes:
True, Florida has no state income tax - but that is because they @*$* you on PROPERTY taxes. We bought property down there recently, and I am just wondering how people keep from losing their homes!
Keep in mind that we've experienced enormous increases in home ownership only within the past 5 to 10 years. One of the reasons I moved to north Florida was the low cost of living . . . at the time (1992).
Since that time, I've seen my house insurance triple or quadruple and a 2% of value hurricane deductible (my case, $3400) added due to the storms the past decade. Home values in our area have gone from a median of $87K in 1997 to a median of $220K in 2004. Correspondingly, property taxes have also increased, but not near the proportion paralleling the market values.
As for wondering why many people haven't lost their homes . . .I think that time will be coming soon. In our tri-county area, a civic group for "affordable housing" found that a crisis is developing in home ownership for average salary workers. Sad.

Hello I am new to Jacksonville, Florida and I have just interviewed with a Longterm Care Facility and the pay for a RN with 2yrs RN experience is $20/hr base pay. On the weekend there is an extra $2/hr and if you work nights the diff is another $2/hr. That is actually in the competitive with pay in Indiana for a staff RN in LTC. Of course if you are management pay is much higher. I was a MDS Coordinator in Indiana but I just want a staff position for right now.
Towanna,Very interesting about Shands, I didn't know they were offering that much. Maybe I will check into it and see what their PRN rate is. I am looking to pick up 2 -12 hour shifts somewhere, I don't need the benefits.
Thanks for the info.
Their PRN rate is pretty decent, with nice shift diffs, however they are trying to limit the numbers of PRN's they hire because they don't want to pay. The shift diffs for regular full-time employees are QUITE nice, and so they don't always have a huge need for PRN's.

I too am from/in IN. LPN on 3rd with 50 residents and 1 or 2 aides, if they both show up. his ratio is outrageous! Is it really better in Florida. I am thinking of pissing off my entire family and moving to Orlando.
