Im sorry but I have to do it. We have a bunch of nurses who have decided for whatever reason to get their MSN's. I have no issue at all with continuing education, however I do have an issue with them doing their homework at work. Not just on downtime, but spread out on different computers, using paper to print their 100 page lectures, plugging in their laptop. When does it end? The charge nurse included. And of course they love triage because they can essentially go un noticed by management for the day. Look, my work load shouldn't increase because your having some sort of mid life crisis and want to get your Masters. PUT IT AWAY. If you do not have time for school, that's not everyone elses problem. Can I have space to sit at a computer so I can chart of MY patients? End rant.
This is a legitimate complaint that many facility employees have. The person that takes on more than they can handle and feels that they have the right to make it everyone elses problem is just plain self absorbed. The rest of the staff have lives/schedules to follow/etc. Going back to school, for whatever reason is their CHOICE. But I reserve the right to have a choice, too.
I'm in school for my MSN (3 yrs part-time, done, 1 year left) in midwifery. I do bring school work in to work, only to be done during downtime or on my meal break. I don't bring my laptop in. I only bring in a folder with articles and modules to read -- IF I have free time to do it. Most of the time, I don't even get a meal break, so guess what? I'm NOT doing school work while I'm at work --- I'm too busy WORKING!
Many facilities have something like a "corporate compliance" department that oversees employee ethics. These are the folks who handle complaints having to do with employees stealing or making sweetheart deals with vendors or accepting unallowable gifts from patients--basically, anything untoward that violates company policy. Some have anonymous numbers where complaints can be made about questionable behaviors like the ones you mentioned.
This might be an option for you. Just be warned that if they find problems, they may come down with a heavy hand. Not saying you shouldn't do it. Just be prepared that the reaction might be harsh. And though the complaints are supposed to be confidential, things don't always work out that way.
I can understand studying during lunch break, see as it's unpaid and technically "your own time" but those who study when they should be working drive me insane. Sure, we'll show each other the occasional youtube video, but that takes all of 2 minutes, not the hours that these folks are spending on homework. It's called homework for a reason!
OMG that would drive me nuts! I used to bring in everything but the kitchen sink for "when it got slow", such as nursing class binder, Kindle, latest People magazine, ACLS prep materials, you name it. I don't have time for that stuff anymore! If it gets quiet I'm like, thank god I finally have time to toilet myself!

On my unit, it just happens to be the "youngins," as you say, who are doing homework, facebooking, and using the internet to plan their next round of binge drinking. It's all about work ethic, not age... some people have it, and some people dont. The solution is a manager who holds his/her employees accountable for their behavior... some units have it, and some units dont.
