Yes, that "mid-life crisis" comment added another dimension to your rant.

I am pretty sure your assessment of their goals is not relevant to the real problem.

What IS relevant is..

using work time and hospital resources is against hospital policy.

Use the appropriate reporting venue... make management aware.

It's simply not right.

Im sorry but I have to do it. We have a bunch of nurses who have decided for whatever reason to get their MSN's. I have no issue at all with continuing education, however I do have an issue with them doing their homework at work. Not just on downtime, but spread out on different computers, using paper to print their 100 page lectures, plugging in their laptop. When does it end? The charge nurse included. And of course they love triage because they can essentially go un noticed by management for the day. Look, my work load shouldn't increase because your having some sort of mid life crisis and want to get your Masters. PUT IT AWAY. If you do not have time for school, that's not everyone elses problem. Can I have space to sit at a computer so I can chart of MY patients? End rant.

Actually, I'm kind of jealous these RNs actually have time at work to do homework. I barely have time to get my charting done.

this is the reason why, the facility where i work doesn't have access to the internet outside from the hospital system, just to avoid this dilemma. however, does who do have access, are monitor closely. unquestionably, i totally agree that homework should be taken care of outside the workplace. undoubtedly, there's no excuse for someone taking timeout which would interfere with the quality of pt. care, no matter what their status is period.

My issue is not that they choose to continue their education. But I know for a fact that none of them wanted to get their Masters until the "youngins" went back to school. The real issue is I have t work harder because your doing homework in the core. By the way personal laptops aren't allowed in the core busy or not. Our core looks like a study group at starbucks instead of a ER. Coffee laptops homework.

They bring their own laptops. Imagine your work computer with a laptop in front. Your triaging patients as you google chat.

They took our internet access away, too, because certain people were on facebook or playing games all evening. As usual, punish everybody, instead of just the guilty parties. In your case, I do think homework/schoolwork should be kept outside of work. If you have that much free time at my facility, that you can do schoolwork, then they would be cutting staff.

i have the exact same issue where i work. only the folks in np school all want to be assigned together in the same 6-bed room so they can have study group after their patients all go to sleep. meanwhile, alice (4 foot 9 inches and 86 pounds) and i are struggling with are 203 kg and 184 kg patient and no one from the study group can be bothered to come help us turn or clean up the patient because "we have finals tomorrow."

i'm also sick of the whole scheduling fiasco where this one can't work tuesdays because they have a class and want to trade but they can't work my monday because they have to study for the class or my thursday because they have a study group session or my saturday because it's, well a saturday. so basically, you just want me to come in and work your tuesday for you? no trade? when she said "yes, that would be nice," i decided i wasn't even going to look at my schedule in the future. it's an automatic "no."

Yeah, that would bug me too.

I carry a folder with some notes to study from if I have downtime or when I have my lunch but I would never do homework or even think about plugging in my laptop while at work.

On my unit, it just happens to be the "youngins," as you say, who are doing homework, facebooking, and using the internet to plan their next round of binge drinking. It's all about work ethic, not age... some people have it, and some people dont. The solution is a manager who holds his/her employees accountable for their behavior... some units have it, and some units dont.
