Randomly picked to complete 265Q? Does this happen?

Nursing Students NCLEX

The nurse educator at my job said that NCLEX randomly picks about 20 to 25 percent of those testing to complete the whole test. She was telling this to the GN's so we wouldn't freak out if we went past 75q but I thought I would ask the Allnurses community about this. Thanks in advance.

i pray that i am not one of those 20-25% to complete the whole test on monday :o i already know if i go past 75 i am going to panic! i really wish i didn't have test anxiety so bad! it makes it so much harder:uhoh3:

To be honest- You need to just prepare yourself to go in and take all the questions. That way if you dont have all of them its just kinda a surprise- Dont freak out!! That is the worst thing you can do!! I have taken the test 3 times and 2 of those times I got 265 questions.... Im not really sure how they decided to give me that... but they did!!

We were told to prepare to be there for 6 hours. Bring lunch, water, etc and prepare for a long day!

I just took the 600 pound gorilla known as the NCLEX and I got somewhere around 190 questions, I wasn't paying attention. :icon_roll I have a painful bladder infection and hot flashes that won't let me sleep. Did I mention the horrible test anxiety? So even though I was a good student in school, I went in expecting to fail at 75 questions....but....they.....just.....kept.....coming! I needed about 5 pee breaks and I kept thinking the next question will be the last...then I started worrying about running out of time and I started to rush, that was when it kicked me out. Pretty sure I got the last one correct.

If I failed, I would be embarrassed that all my classmates are passing in 75 questions and I was a good student. Good enough that that should have been me as well. However, I can honestly say I didn't do the best prep. So this time, I'll sign up again right away and do Suzanne's plan. At this point I don't think Kaplan helped me. My brain doesn't seem to work by test taking tricks apparently. I have to know that I know the material better.

Oh, and I scored 62% on Q7 and 60% overall in the Qbank for Kaplan, borderline I know. I think my test anxiety got the best of me. That and my painful bladder.

i am going to be you on monday. i have freakin bronchitis, and by monday will have my....ya know...monthly friend which really sux! did i mention i'm a train wreck with tests?

i think the avg number of questions are like 198 kaplan said,

im sure you did fine!

Even if that 198 is a made up statistic, THANK YOU, :redbeathe:redbeathe:redbeathe:redbeathe What time do you take you test and I'll send you my good thoughts as I'll be online checking for my results

That is not true!! Kaplan told us that is one of the big rumors about the NCLEX. They said each person gets as many questions as they need until the computer decides to shut off. The reason you would get 265 questions is if you were treading the pass line throughout the whole test. You can either pass or fail if you take all 265 questions. You can go to the BRN website and it will tell you all about it so you know what to expect. Hope that helps!! :D

thank you very much!!! i figured the same thing, although i too heard the rumors. the only person i know who got 265 and passed is a student who was not a great test talker in my class. i figured there is no way it is random. i figured she was border-line through most of the test and when she passed question 75 the test must have thought she needs more questions. other students who performed better on tests in my class stopped at 75 exactly and passed or just under 100 questions and passed. so my test taking strategy is to take my time! i am not going to rush thinking i will get 265. if i show the test i am doing well with the first 75 then i should stop near 75 or at that point. if we are wrong, someone please correct us!! :D

I have seen straight A students get 265 questions.

It comes down to the fact that the number of questions does not tell one anything. And I have never heard of 25% of those that test going all the way to 265 questions, so that throws that hypothesis out the window.

And there are quite a few that do not pass with 75 questions either, so that is not the number to be striving for either. If you are doing so poorly on the exam and the computer determines that there is no way that you are going to pass the exam, it will also turn off at 75 as well.

There are so many things that go into determining if one has passed the exam, number one is the level of questions that you are receiving as well as how you answer them.

Please do not focus on the number of questions nor if one gets the last one right or wrong; these just do not determine anything.

Best of luck on your exam.

Suzabbe:

Does this mean that since I got questions about garlic and radium implants and about 25 like this somewhere in the middle of 190 that I failed? If that's the case, why bother, why not fail a person instead of giving lower level questions? Thankfully I'm in CA and I'll find out quick. Then it's on to Suzanne and Saunders for me!!!

Wait for your results, no one can predict with the questions on how you did. Hang in there and good luck
