Random Thoughts: School Nurses

Random Thoughts about School Nursing not juicy enough for their own topic start here!

So, a first grader got knocked in the head with the bathroom stall door this morning then proceeded to lock himself in the stall refusing to speak to anyone.

Who you gonna call? Well your nearest school nurse, of course! Apparently, I have magical powers to lure stubborn little boys from bathroom stalls. Umm...no.

After using my kindest, caring voice (I had to dig deep here, folks)...little guy would NOT come out and our male principal had to come to the rescue. Then our little guy got in line in the hallway, covered his face, and refused to look at me or answer my questions. NO assessment allowed. I figure he must be fine if he can lock himself up for that long in the stall. Stubborn little booger.

OMGoodness, the bathroom stalkers are the WORST!!! Unless a child has bone protruding from his/her flesh, let me use the potty in peace!!!!

"Where is she? She's not there? Are you sure she's not there?" Grrrr.

I got scammed today. I was in the midst of emails for one of my favorite FF problem children and a kid who I never saw walked in and said he had a headache and can he just lay down for a bit. It was about 15-20 minutes in to last period, and I usually ship 'em back to class. For some reason I waved him over to the cots and let him stay. There was a little nagging part of me that said send him back, but I figured, I don't know him, he must really be sick.

Afterwards I realized he had a massive project due that class. His teacher called me.

WHY??? OH WHY, do kids feel like they must change their perfectly intact band-aid at school??????? If mom placed it on there at home, let it be changed at home unless absolutely necessary!!!

Esp those perfect band aids on the knee when wearing skinny jeans that are impossible to pull the leg up to get to the band aid. Usually hand them the band aid and send them to the bathroom to change it themselves!

Ugh teachers and non nurses. If there is a girl kneeling down in front of a toilet with nausea, no one asks her if she is okay- they run to find me. So now a teacher knows, an AP knows, the hall monitor knows, and the Principal's secretary know this girl is sick...but no one asks her if she is okay?

Then they start talking about "bulimia"?

She was nauseous. She took her acne meds on an empty stomach. I believe her. There is no reason for me not to. She laid down for a few, ate a muffin and went to class.

THEN, everyone involved who was so concerned call me to make sure she is okay.

Why did you not ask the student if she was okay, or if she needed help? Or a nurse?

Shoot me.

Did you have to take off running down the hall to check on her? Meanwhile, leaving a clinic full of kids unattended? You are aware that nausea and vomiting cause paralysis and the only cure is for a nurse to show up and say "looks like you are good, let's walk to the clinic." Goodness, WE ARE miracle workers!

I saw it and didn't really want to weight in. ONE person made an idiotic decision. She can live with it.

85 year old teacher fell. O joy. :(
