Hi all, I met a healthcare recruiter last week, passed the pre-qualifying test, submitted my CV for review. I was told that the quota for med-surg nurses for this year for army is almost filled, which means no hiring till oct 09 when next fiscal year kicks in. I am not very clear about this...does this mean my recruiter has met his hiring quota for the year, or is their a specific numeric quota for army reserve for each year...also, is their any way i can still hope to be hired in this fiscal year...?? appreciate your rsponse guys, I owe a lot to this forum!!

Hi!
actually, I just heard from a CPT in my unit who said the ANC itself is full. They are not planning on taking anyone else in, barring this weeks board until October. It has nothing to do with a quota but there aren't any slots available to put any nurses in.
i would think the only way you could get in to the military right now is to go to another branch. Or the option is to wait till October (?---> since the paperwork and board process takes some time maybe they would let you start everything say end of August???? and be ready for Oct board)... just a thought

Yep,
I also heard from a recruiter, that eventhough our "unit is short 30 RNs (reserve)", the national qouta is near full.......because of the midwest-----filling up the numbers.......So, they were going to stop recruiting RNs ....maybe until the new FYR? I believe this is common in other branches as well, but I don't know their status currently.
I do know a new rn in my unit was told he can't go to OBLC, because there is no $$$ to send him right now.
Apply later in the summer, maybe? What does your recruiter say to do?
Good Luck,
c.

Is this something that happens frequently? Or has something to do with the economy? I always had it in my head that going back into the military would be an available option in case the hospitals still had hiring freezes for new grads in the future.
Hmmm... don't really know the answer to that one. I would presume its because of the economy, my recruiter said he was inundated w/ calls. He also said it was due to the success of recruitment by the Army for nurses that made it happen.

I know alot of hospitals in my area have hiring freezes and are not even doing agency nurses. Wow !!! But I know when I first started the process last year the same thing happend. Do any of you who are almost a year into the process remember some of the people on here having that issue but it seemed like that wasn't until august or september.

Every branch has manpower requirements (quota) placed on them annually. Until last year the Army has not really fully met the ANC quota and have been short... you can interpret it how you want but I do not think it is a sudden interest in the military rather nurses looking for a viable job and in economic strain.. as previous poster said that he/she had military as an always available option in the background.
Every branch has requirements.. so they pass on goals to each health care recruiting district team... so that way everyone can have goal to meet.
If ANC is full then yes complete your packet and you have to wait until next fiscal year. Perhaps if there is not such a shortage this changes bonuses to equalize supply / demand... perhaps not you just have to wait and see. If they have met their mission then that is awesome for then as we are only midway through the year! If this is the new case maybe we see the boards being competitive in the future for nursing slots.

??? for anyone who wishes to answer.
Do you all think in the next few years that nursing boards will get more competitive.i.e gpa, experience etc.
With the economy the way it is especially for more skilled nurses to get the compensation they need?
Just curious. I know my parents and I had this conversation a while back and we thought that when the economy gets tight and the DOD missions change that things will get more competitive and less bonus, student loan repayment etc. Just wanting some opinions.
it's hard to predict what the future will bring I think. there could be the possibility of all the above you mentioned Sassy but I would hope that it remains equal and that Qualified means Qualified. say for instance they went just by GPA--- there's some book smart but clinically dumb nurses out there...... I've met them, I've worked with them and they've left me a little scared. Sure experience is a factor to look at, but new grads have much to offer enthusiasm and a lot of fresh knowledge in their heads
as for the bonus/ student loan repayment, not sure about that either. i could see the amounts for the bonus going down but one of the draws to the military is the student loan repayment and I would think that would remain the same
thanks for all the replies guys, atleast now I know how long to wait. I cant seek other military branches because I am trying to enlist under teh new MAVNI program for non-citizens which would run till dec 31. So this kinda puts me at a tough spot, no hiring till oct, and after dec 31 for me. Lets hope my packet is ready for oct boards.
timeline for me was:
met w/ recruiter and got initial paperwork: spetember 08
toured the unit: october 08
had all my paperwork ready for the Board November 08
so overall about 2 months time from putting my name on the top line to having the approval of the Board to Commission.
other people have different scenarios.

so you never had to go through MEPs? Well, for me the process is lengthened by stringent background check, coz im not a ctizen , followed my physical exam, army computer test, then i will be eligible to fill the application, followed by boards.
