A man tells his little boy as they walk by my med cart, "Know what that is? That's where they keep big needles to stick bad little boys."
I didn't say anything because I was super busy and didn't feel like arguing with him, but I really wanted to say "Seriously, what is wrong with you?? You just lied to your child and made him associate nurses with punishment! I hope your kid never ends up in the hospital because you're going to be the one who has to calm your hysterical child down every time a nurse comes in the room."
Why would anyone tell their kid something like that?

I have no answer for this question, except it shows what type of environment a child is living in.
I had a Mom in the Pedi practice states to her 5 year old," here comes that mean nurse with the shots".
At the time a 5 year old in our state received many shots, blood work and
other school entrance requirements. The child started crying and in a panic. I abandoned the procedures and asked the Mom to give a time out and I would return.
We had a protocol for how we like to involve the parent in assisting and the Mom ended up rescheduling no shots or bloodwork were done that day.
It is so sad to see a child escalated by their own parent, many weeks later the child returned with Dad and the visit went fine.
It is understandable that parents get nervous about office visits, but common sense and compassion needs to prevail.
Heaven help that little guy if he needs to go the the hospital, words leave an impression-shame on that parent.
Nothing like making the job of nurses, doctors, police,fireman and other professional even more difficult..
I recently had a similar situation during peds clinical. A 3 yr old didn't want to take his PO concoction (pill crushed in juice, in a syringe). The mom said "if you don't take this, we're gonna get the doctor and he'll give you a shot."
I work part time doing flu clinics and hear this... makes me want to stop what I am doing, and explain that I am the good guy... and educate the parents that they are only instilling fear in their child
No matter how low I set my expectations, people still find a way to astound me with a new level of ignorance and stupidity. With any luck the child got his brains from his mom and will learn dad has not much more than lint between his ears before he is too damaged by his fathers words of "wisdom".
This is one of the worst things I see parents do. One "mom" at Target actually told her young son,
"That lady's going to get you if you don't stop crying." while pointing at me! I walked over and said to the child, "Your mommy is really, really, really dumb."
The "mom" looked shocked. She looked really dumb, too.

I saw some similar things on my Peds unit and I just wanted to smack the parent. One mom was like "Oh is my little boy sad because those mean nurses keep poking at you".
That case I had just watched the kid and held him for over 2 hrs so mom could go run errands. I was like SERIOUSLY?!?!?!
I walked over and said to the child, "Your mommy is really, really, really dumb."
Yep - that would be my point. Right or wrong - that kid is probably going to stick up for his Mom and not like the nurse that is mean to the Mom (even if the nurse was right).

I hear it all the time. I work in peds and the parent will tell their hospitalized child that if they don't behave that I'm going to give them a shot.
I usually smile and tell the chid that I only have mommy and daddy shots today.
If I had a dollar for every time I heard, "be good or the nurse is gonna give you a shot!". Those are the same parents who can't figure out why the kid is petrified to go to the doctor!

I was a sick kid. A fell, split my tongue when I bit it and had to go to the ER. The nurse told me to "hold the gauze tight or you will have to get stitches and it will really hurt!" I was 5.
When I was 8 I had open heart surgery. The nurse told me I was going to die and go to hell because I wasn't baptized. Year after that I ended up with pneumonia and really was having difficulty breathing. The nurse took a foot long needle off the tray and told me if I ddn't stop coughing she was going to "stick the big needle" in my chest.

Oh my Lord!!! All of that was just horrible!!!! I'm so sorry and I wish I had been a nurse then so I could have at least said something comforting and a great big hug as well. Poor Baby :heartbeat
