Sigh... I am sure we have all had one of those days where everything goes wrong. I am currently working as an ESN (Employed Student Nurse) in a local hospital on a surgical unit. I love it... most of the time.
I AM SORRY...
I am sorry that I am still a student, and I need you to co-sign for my narcs
I am sorry that I need your help when starting a heparin drip... i have never done it before
I am sorry that I have had so many first times on the unit, and that you wish i just knew it all so i could leave you alone
I am sorry that I ask so many questions throughout the day, I am still learning
I am sorry that I do not feel comfortable taking out staples when clearly there is no order for their removal
I am sorry that I need you to refill the running epidural bag since I am not allowed to handle them as a student
I am sorry that I do not have all of your patient's bed's changed and made, as well as toileted while you are on break, I went from 2 patients as a student to 8 as an ESN (I AM DROWNING)... i wish you would attempt to try and understand, or think back.
I am sorry that I cannot override the pyxis for a neb...
I am sorry that I need to pee more than once every 8 hours
I am sorry that I need a second person to help boost up a heavy patient
I am sorry that I charted my stuff before you got around to doing your charting, ending with your charting having a bunch of "late entries"
I am sorry that I needed you when my patient's BP shot up, became extremely sweaty and was complaining about severe chest pains
I am sorry that I am "annoying" and a "good for nothing student" as you tell your co-workers under your breath
I am sorry that I stayed in the room with my patient as she discovered her unexpected colostomy, as you left and told me she will get over it
I am sorry that you are so over worked... i wish i could make it better for you, I try my best to hold my own workload
Most of all...
I am sorry that you dont think I have what it takes, or that i did something to make you dislike me... or that you think I am a good for nothing student,... apparently you are wrong, because I was offered a job today on that unit as soon as I finish school :)
When you get your footing there, you may want to mention to your manager that this nurse was a very poor preceptor. She should not take students anymore if she is going to act this way towards them. I know my manager would want to know.
Unfortunately, you will always run into people like this.
sarah you are awsome i love the whole attuide you have the chipper ness everything i want you to be my co worker please i could use some one like you on my floor all the other nurses are nice but i think you would be awsome with us i would try to convince you to come to iowa and work but to each thier own
haha SpikaRN, I currently live just outside Vancouver, BC... not sure if the new grad situation is the same here as it is in the states, but right now we have had a 2 month hiring freeze on new grads to transfer the RNs in LTC to acute care. I have a friend who works in emerg, they have 15 positions open.. none being filled... what RN wants to go from LTC to emerg? haha.
haha, well when time comes to grad, i'll make sure I write my NCLEX along with my CRNE and maybe we will be able to work together someday. It really is, a small world

--students are only expected to work within their competence.
I am sorry that I need your help when starting a heparin drip... i have never done it before
--students are expected to ask questions if they are in doubt of anything. This can save a life.
I am sorry that I have had so many first times on the unit, and that you wish i just knew it all so i could leave you alone
--there are always firsts . As a student everything will be new.
I am sorry that I ask so many questions throughout the day, I am still learning
--students are expected to ask questions, this shows they are learning and engaged in the process.
I am sorry that I do not feel comfortable taking out staples when clearly there is no order for their removal
--everything will take practice.
I am sorry that I need you to refill the running epidural bag since I am not allowed to handle them as a student
--not your job. not your worry.
I am sorry that I do not have all of your patient's bed's changed and made, as well as toileted while you are on break, I went from 2 patients as a student to 8 as an ESN (I AM DROWNING)... i wish you would attempt to try and understand, or think back.
--ask for assistance, or say that you cannot handle the workload. Your leader cannot read your mind.
I am sorry that I cannot override the pyxis for a neb...
--its ok and accepted you are new.
I am sorry that I need to pee more than once every 8 hours
--it is ok and accepted you are human.
I am sorry that I need a second person to help boost up a heavy patient
--never lift anyone. Use moving techniques and lifts always. Always be two people at a patient. Learn how to move people and not lift them. You will kill your back and get an injury. Then you will be sorry!
I am sorry that I charted my stuff before you got around to doing your charting, ending with your charting having a bunch of "late entries"
--seriously. a non issue.
I am sorry that I needed you when my patient's BP shot up, became extremely sweaty and was complaining about severe chest pains
--you reported an observation you saw thats terrific!
I am sorry that I am "annoying" and a "good for nothing student" as you tell your co-workers under your breath
--everyone is good for something =)
I am sorry that I stayed in the room with my patient as she discovered her unexpected colostomy, as you left and told me she will get over it
--only the patient knows this information, you know that.
I am sorry that you are so over worked... i wish i could make it better for you, I try my best to hold my own workload
--it sounds like the colleague needs to manage her time better.

--You will do great!
I say, don't be sorry about all of those things. If I were you, I would call that nurse out on their BS. When they have a snide remark, a sigh, etc ask them what is wrong. Don't put up with passive aggressiveness from anyone. If you cannot call them on it by yourself then ask that the head of the department be in on this. That is ridiculous that you get treated that way!
I loved this. Now copy what you wrote, put it in a safe place that you won't forget, and read it when you have had a busy day with students or new nurses. As a nurse educator, (Chair of a RN nursing program) I feel too many nurses forget ALL of this. Good for you! Good luck in your new position. It's students like you that make teaching nursing a rewarding place to be! Thanks!
Awe you guys are so sweet :) My mom always says that I need to pay my dues and thats why people sometimes give me a hard time. Which, is true, I never expected it to be an easy road.I really enjoy being quite independent, and working with this RN has stopped me from relying on her and forced me to really be "The Nurse". And I do thank her for that...
I am sorry you were treated this way. It is terrible to feel like you are drowning and that no one will help. Was this nurse not your preceptor? Also, why do people think new nurses need to "pay their dues"? I can understand the thought process of paying your dues through the huge learning curve of the first year to 2 years but not paying your dues through being treated poorly. Are we not suppose to be a caring profession? Caring should be between co-workers as well as towards our patients. It sickens me when I hear of a new nurse being treated this way. It is not paying your dues. It is called bullying. We need to be supportive of one another in this all so stressful environment in which we work.
