As most of you know, I have been recommending initial licensure in NY for quite some time. And for those of you that did not heed the warning, you now know why.
New York is three easy applications only, next you take the NCLEX exam, then you get a hard license and can endorse to almost any state afterwards. Because of the requirements of the Special Credentials Verification for New York, you do not have to do any of the running around to obtain your documents. CGFNS will obtain them for you....after you sign the release and send them the money.
NY also requires two short classes that can be done on-line, one on Child Abuse, and the other on Infection. Both are available for about $15 each and take only one hour or so.
NY BON application can be found at http://www.op.nyed.gov. You only need to submit "Form 1."
The Special Credentials Verification can be found at http://www.CGFNS.org, as well as the Visa Screen Application.
Once you have received documentation from NY that your credentials have been received and approved, submit payment to Pearson-Vue for the NCLEX exam. http://www.perasonvue.com. They are the ones that will actually send you the ATT letter, upon approval of the Board of Nursing. Be aware that this ATT (authorization to test) is only good for ninety (90) days. You will have onlt that amount of time to get the exam done in, otherwise you will lose your payment and have to start again.
Hope that this helps................ :balloons:
Most importantly, NY will issue you the license without a Social Security Number.
i am a registered nurse, licensed to practice nursing in the philippines, uk & usa (vermont & california). i strongly recommend to all foreign nurses to apply for initial rn licensure with vermont board of nursing.
please take note of the following reasons why i recommend vermont board of nursing (vbn):
1. vbn only requires foreign nurses to submit completed application form, $125 check, 2x2 picture and transcript of records (sealed by school registrar).
2. vbn doesn't need social security number and fbi fingerprint card.
3. vbn can process your application in three-month time. california & other states may take more than six months to complete the processing of applications.
4. vbn personally evaluates your credentials & transcript of records. thus, foreign nurses need not to pay huge amount of dollars to cgfns for credential evaluation services. this is an advantage against new york, arizona, texas & other states which depend cgfns for credential evaluation.
5. vbn issues permanent license to foreign nurses even without social security number
6. rn licenses issued by vbn can be endorsed to all states in the usa. ohio which requires foreign nurses to pass tse waves such requirement if foreign applicants endorse a vermont license.
thanks...
ny will not permit endorsement until you have the cvs done. nj requires that you pass the cgfns exam, as does connecticut, michigan, and pennsylvania.the nclex exam has reciprocity and is accepted in all states, but you still need to meet the requirements of that state. nclex is only part of the licensing process.
ohio board of nusing waves their tse & cgfns requirements to foreign nurses with vermont rn license & others. i think all other bon has the common sense to wave cgfns requirement when a foreign applicant passed the nclex or licensed in one of the us boards of nursing.
bsn, rn (philippines, uk, usa (california & vermont)

you got this wrong and suzanne is right about ny......
iam ny licensed and ny bon require all foreign nurses seeking endorsement to ny state to submit cvs from cgfns before ny bon would evaluate your tor......
ny actually has the strictest requirements when it comes to evaluation of transcripts and licenses from other countries

wrong, must will still require the ces, even if they are licensed in another state.
nclex-rn is only an exam. period. it is only part of the licensing process. the results of the exam are valid in all states, but a license does not automatically transfer. you listed only one state. most still require the ces to endorse, if they required it for initial licensure. nj no longer requires the cgfns exma, but it requires the ces of any foreign nurse wishing to practice there, even by endorsement. ny will require the cvs, even of the nurse is licensed in another state.
the information that you are giving is incorrect. please verify it before posting it here.
Hello to every one, esp. to speedtec, lakwatsero and laurence01 and jonMD,
As I've promised I will keep you up to date as to my status with my application to NY-BON and CVS. It has been a month since I inquired about my situation from this forum and upto now I have not heard from my applications for CVS for NY and NY-BON.
Two days ago, I emailed NY-BON regarding my application, hoping they could give me my eligibility so I could register to p.vue, to my surprise, NY-BON replyed to my email within 24 hours! But sadly, the email stated that they do not have my papers yet, and I have to contact CGFNS for that. grrrrrrrrrrr.....
After 7 months of waiting!!!! Last night I called CGFNS, the lady on the other line is cold, like a robot, (probably due to the millions of callers she entertains each day), but after hearing about my application, I sensed the surprise on her voice, as if wondering "why the h--- is this application still here?"
So I aired my concern and she just said, my papers will be sent to NY shortly.
SHORTLY? and I ask for specifics, but she was firm on her reply "shortly.." So, there is nothing else I can do but thank the lady for her time.
I checkd my status in their website a few minutes ago, and from status of "READY TO BE SENT" (which incidentallly, is what I've been seeing for months now) is finally "REPORT MAILED" in just less than 24hours!
Well, I guess, that is what she meant by shortly... :)
I guess, I learned my lesson the hard way, if I called earlier, CGFNS would have sent my papers to NY sooner...
Well, for those who are still waiting for their papers, my advise... CALL! and follow up!
Now, it doesnt seem to hurt as much coz I know my papers are moving, and I still have a long way with my review with NCLEX :)
Hope this post lightened the screen a bit... coz it made mine. :)
thanks to all and Good LUCK...

hi suzanne,
i have a question as i'm a bit confused with the requirements for ny bon.
i understand that i need to complete form 1 and then request for ces and cvs from cgfns.
my question is, is it a requirement that i first become an rn in my own country before i can apply for nclex examination as stated in the cgfns handbook below?
the credentials verification service for new york state is required for all foreign-educated registered nurses (rn), licensed practical nurses (lpn), physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, occupational therapists, and occupational therapy assistants who are applying for a license to practice in the state of new york. the service independently collects and verifies the authenticity of your educational and licensing documents, which are then forwarded to the new york state education department to be evaluated as part of your new york state licensing application.
my problem is that i just took the local liscensure for rn last june and sadly, i'm not so sure i passed it.
hope anyone can help. thanks!

where does it state that you have to be licensed in your country? it does not say that you need to have it, but if you do, then they will need to verify it. if they required it, it would have stated so.
and where are you getting this informatino that ny requires the ces? they do not, they require only the cvs.
you will need the application of the cvs, which is credentials verification for ny, the application for actual ny license, which is just page one only, and they you will need a vsc, which is a visa screen certificate. only the three items, you are making more work for yourself.
but if you are not going to work in ny, do not go that route.
if you notice, it is no longer a sticky........there are several other states that issue a license now and without the ssn#.
HI
I applied in NY for my license. CGFNS recieved my application feb 15, 2006. And recieved my documents from SCHOOL and LIcensing authority last MAY 24. I called them and they informed me that it will take 4 to 6 weeks to process after recieveing all the documents. On the 6th week (today, july 7), I called to follow up and they said that it will take 45 days to process starting june 12.
Anyhow, after recieving the papers from CGFNS CVS...... how long does it usually take for NY BON to process the application and mail it to Pearson VUE? And how long will it take for Pearson- Vue to mail me the ATT.
Thank you :)

It would really be best to apply to a state that will issue you a license without an SSN. Arizona issues a license after passing the NCLEX and after submission of the fingerprint card even without a SSN. I don't know which other states also does this. Hope this helps.
