Question ladies...

So, this might seem unusual to some, but I only pose the question because my wife brought it up. She is in an ECG course and the male instructor requires each one of the female students to take off their tops to their bras and have other students take 12-leads on them. He also requires the male students in the class (2 of them) to remove their shirts completely. Now there doesn't seem to be much regard for the respect of others who may not want to participate but my wife left early one night because she didn't want to be the one on the table in front of everybody; she's not the only woman in the class bothered by this either.

I'm a nurse myself and have been doing these kinds of courses and trainings for more than ten years and that seems unheard of and a little creepy to me. I want to call and talk to the director at the school and ask if this is accepted practice but is that going too far..?

Any input or anyone's opinion would be gratefully appreciated.

Ok, so I was getting the run-around when trying to get in touch with the department head so I just called the Dean's office and placed my complaint with the Dean's secretary which got prompt attention of the Dean's office. I was put immediately in contact with an agent of the director that oversees the health sciences college at the university. I left the complaint anonymously so that nobody would be singled out and will follow up with the director tomorrow.

Now the scary part, I've got to go tell my wife what I have gone and done!!

I agree it is totally inappropriate but if it were me I would want to handle it myself. I would be really upset if my husband intervened on my behalf.

Good for you for reporting it and good for her for walking out. I hope she can see that you have her back. This is so inappropriate and needs to be investigated. Something good may come out of this after all is said and done.

Especially if being notified after the fact.

We had already talked about it and she was scared to do it herself due to repercussion. I've known three female scientists personally who told me about some disgusting stories of male instructors in a position of power using that position to take advantage of these young women and I refuse to allow anything of the sort to continue if I have the opportunity to intervene. My big worry is that she will be apprehensive to finish the course.

I understand what she was feeling. She may have been or felt too vulnerable to intervene. You did the right thing by reporting this. Whatever happens, this needed to be addressed, and you took the lead this time. I applaud your action(s). I do hope she can finish the course after this is ironed out.

You did this without her blessing?! I'd be PIZZED to high heaven!

*Perhaps*, since you filed a complaint anonymously on behalf of a group, you may want to keep it entirely anonymous? So she doesn't wear awkward guilt when she goes to class?

Sometimes it's better not to place that burden on an individual and just take it to the grave knowing you simply advocated for a group not feeling the courageous to do it themselves.

I'm the odd man out here; to be good at anything you need to practice on the real thing. If you aren't comfortable in your own body than perhaps its not your thing. Also, the variety of bodies does give you the advantage to get the real teaching (fat vs skinny etc...).

What are we talking about here? This sounds naughty............ Of course you DO NOT need to practice 12 lead EKG placement on your half naked student, that's what manikins are for in that setting Hahahaha now, what you just described would be appropriate if I was training to be an exotic dancer at a happy ending joint..... :D

Please let us know the outcome of this...
