3 Qualities My Family Doc Must Have

Nurses, tell us: What are the 3 most important qualities that your personal doctor must have?

1. Accept my knowledge and listen to my concerns as an informed pt.

2. Know my limitations with my knowledge as a nurse vrs.being the patient

3. Always tell me straight up how things are, not the generic doctor speak, (which says nothing) and kick me in the behind when needed.

My Doctor has three very important qualities.

1. She is a thorough listener.

2. She treats me like the professional I am.

3. She is very compassionate.

and a fourth one- She likes her job!

I will never change family doctors unless I move away from the area.

1. Must look me in the eye and have a firm hand shake

2. Read my chart and pay attention to my previous admits and my allergies

3. Be compasionate and not take me for a nut job, listen to what I am telling you!

These are all so good; I'm not sure I can add anything new.

What I like about my PCP:

1) He has an incredible sense of humor and makes me laugh, a lot!

2) He always treats me as if I'm the only person he has to see.

3) If he says he'll call me with results, he calls me with results. Quickly.

He's also kind, supportive and incredibly on top of his game. I really got lucky when I was referred to him.

1. My PCP must be a Nurse Practitioner! If I have any choice at all anymore, I always see an NP because...

2. They take the time to listen

3. They actually seem to care

Of course, I know there are also great docs out there, NPs just seem to more consistently have the above qualities.

1. Must listen to me and answer my questions to my satisfaction

2. Must treat me as though he really cares what happens to me

3. Must be reachable after hours

1. Must be a realist. (Able to see past someone's being overweight, smoker, name your bad habit and know these are all not going to be fixed overnight. More importantly, realize that these may not be the ONLY cause for someone's medical problems.)

2. Be willing to practice hand in hand with "alternative" medicine. (Chiropractic, herbal remedies, massage, letting nauture take it's course etc.) One textbook solution doesn't work for everyone.

3. Collaborate with me and keep me in the loop. My input is important. I'm the one it's affecting. I can interpret test results too.

Just 3 1.Same day appointment when I am sick.Or call me if I've called office

2. Not waiting to long, in the check in area or after put in a room.

3. For daily medications give me RX 's for 90 days with 3 refills. (My insurance allows that per mail order for chronic daily medications)

Oh, and it would be nice if he /she said hello when sees me at work(just hello, nothing about treatment)! Plus most every thing else that has been said. Know the new medications and treatments for my conditions.Let me try them and not stay with ones that are not working or making me sick.

1. Compassionate competence (regardless of sex - I've had two female docs and they've not been good experiences).

2. Same day appts for time my kids are very ill.

3. Don't talk about me behind my back.
