  1. Yes, I'm a parent. I need help with my medically fragile son, and a break sometimes fro working my butt off all day caring for him. I am exhausted after doing this for all day...sometimes all night too. And I'm 35 weeks pregnant. And somehow, about...
  2. Vent Alarms Ordered to be Turned Off

Is it a video monitor? Some of them have cameras you can move remotely to check on the display readouts and patients without going in the room. That might be a good option.
  3. Student doesn't eat and I'm the person to fix it!

I would refer to counselor. This definitely sounds like a behavioral /sensory issue and I think the counselor would be in a better position to address it, or if he gets speech or OT that might also be a better way to approach.
  4. Bipap s/t....like a vent case or not?

I'm just curious as to what the overall opinions on this are. Seems to me that nurses with zero vent experience are about as useful as a baby monitor with this, esp when there are issues.....but apparently it's still considered "not a vent" and appro...
  5. Bipap s/t....like a vent case or not?

This makes sense..unfortunately the agency we had been with stopped staffing his case after a 12 day hospitalization and it's all new people...there's nobody to shadow.
  6. Bear Hug Transfer

Using lifts is a skill.....and a one person job. You should learn to use the lifts..ask if there is a instruction manual that came with it or call the equipment company and ask if the rep can come show you how to use it. They really are not difficult...
  7. The pt that always slides down

    Z- flo pillows.
  8. Why of why.....can nobody actually show up on time?

Thanks for the feedback....it's hard being pregnant and sleep deprived and doing this! Anyway, I'm just kinda sick of people telling me they can do x-y-z and they get here, and hey it turns out they need me to go over a bunch of stuff with them becau...
  9. Attachment to patient and vice versa

So, he is dependent on you for his care, and now he needs to find other care for the hours you aren't available to work because of your school schedule, correct? He had a stable caregiver lined up, and finding a new routine or additional providers fo...
  10. Nurses are Not Doctors

Obviously there is a problem in that state with access to primary care. Seems like they are hoping this will provide some solution to that problem. In many states, nurses do not need physician supervision, but they do need a plan for whom to refer o...
  11. Insulin Administration: Standing and Sliding Scales

There shoulda also be protocols for hypo that include any necessary adjustments to the usual 8u
  12. Does nursing really suck that badly?

No, nursing itself does not suck that bad. BUT some PEOPLE, both nurses and non-nurses, do suck that much, and make everyone they work with miserable. It happens in all jobs, but it seems that in many areas of nursing it was long expected that nurses...
  13. Substitute Pay

23.80/hr, the actual time you are there can vary from 4-7 hours. in Ohio.
  14. I am counting it as 60 but some are telling me 90 or even 120.
  15. I mean......all four local agencies have been called. They found 1 LPN who was willing to do nights, but who then lied about her peds experience.
  16. Hydrocortisone injection pen?

My son's ped endo wrote us a prescription for this. I used up his emergency SoluCortef shot over the weekend (Long story but he's OK) This so called 'hydrocortisone pen" she wrote for doesn't seem to exist. It seems to be a wild goose chase sh...
  17. How much free water/fluid do you count 1/2 cup applesauce as?

Finally found my book that this is in! It gives a person 50-75% of its total weight as free water, if there is no sodium added. The other 25-50% is solids. Obviously depends quite a bit on how much water is used in preparation!
  18. How much free water/fluid do you count 1/2 cup applesauce as?

It isn't 120 ml of water. There are solids in it that do not count...just cannot recall how much solid vs liquid is in there!
  19. Anyone doing a "non-clinical" MSN (not direct entry)?

I am....its Health Sciences Leadership and Management, and I am doing the Education track. I have taught health sciences classes as an adjunct before (not in nursing though) and really liked it. So I know I'd like teaching RN's or being a nurse edu...
  20. Aspiring Nurses: Why not Med School??

Might as well ask "why not Biomedical Engineering? Or Medical Law? Or Physical Therapy" Yes, they are THAT different.
  21. And nothing. At all. Anyone know how I can get this application mailed to me? I have followed the directions for contacting the board to get an application 4 times now, and apparently am being ignored. I do not have time to drive all the way to Ba...
  22. Airlock or not with Cortef?

Just wondering what U would do.....got a weird look from another nurse when I pulled the airlock in...I have always put airlocks in behind steroids due to the effects they can have on skin.
  23. I think that most nurses would be happy to change at work...IF they were provided with a locker to store their street clothes while working and a decent locker room. Maybe the issue is the facilities, not the people.
  24. are "fake nails" okay for nurses?

:roll :roll Much like the nails, stuff in this thread CANNOT BE KILLED!! Nail salons are a hotbed of nasty germs....and so is the community at large, where do you think those sick patients are spending their time before hospitalization and after, a...
  25. Esp one that works with special needs kids would be good....we are moving there in a couple of months and I am really nervous to just find a ped blindly in a new place. x-posted on the MD forum as well.
