Professors fail everyone?

Hey so I was wondering if a nursing professor will still fail you even if you put in a lot of effort over the semester to do well. Like you went to go get help from the in-school tutors and visited her after you didn't do well on tests and stuff.

I'm going in the final for my Womens/Peds class right on the brink of failing. I have to raise my grade 4 points in order to pass. My grades have steadily been improving over the semester and I honestly can say that I have done my best.

Will the professor still fail me if I don't do so well on the final?

don't you nurses have people to save... and the students... exams to study for?

Nope. I finished work at 4:30. I do no "people saving" on my own time.

Well, since we are being "blunt" here......

I responded to what you wrote with what I thought, based on my experiences as a nurse, and obviously a former nursing student. Clearly you did not get where I was coming from, and why. So be it.

You can explain all the reasons why I am wrong to feel what I feel and write what I write, but...in the end....I still completely disagree with your response to the OP, and would say so again, except it would likely be fruitless anyway.

Viva la difference!

YOU HAVE CRUSHED MY SOUL AND SHATTERED ALL HOPE. My life is RUINED!!!!!!!!!

You forgot to call her a mean-spirited bully. Missed your opportunity! ;)

Well good job. you learned therapeutic communication and yet you dont know how to use it properly, good luck on your exams!

and to all the haters, dont be bitter just because my prof hooked me up! psh...

Trust me jetro, nobody is bitter you got extra points. And also know that it is not something to be proud of. Sure you passed because an instructor took pity on you but that was a disservice to you as you didn't actually deserve to pass. Good for you for failing but getting passed anyway. Some of us are more proud of our ability to pass with our own knowledge over out ability to suck up to a professor and beg.

Really?

No, nor do we wish to be admonished for posting on a forum that is intended for exactly that. Since time others spend here is of concern to you.....shouldn't you be studying now?

i was studying... back to the grind... good day/night.

Really? I would love to see your transcripts. I'm gonna assume you are a rhode scholar? You passed all your classes with A's. Received 100% on all your exams that were not curved, quizzes, assignments, clinical work, research, papers, presentations, and the instructors gave NO EXTRA CREDIT :roflmao: ??????

The OP stated it was 4%. Do I think she should be passed? No. If it were 4 POINTS, and she did everything she could meaning: tutoring services, meeting with the instructor after every exam, group study etc, did all assigned work attended class every class period, came on time and stayed.......Yes. Some of you will say where does the instructor draw the line with points? It depends.

In my cohort this semester, we are losing people. I'll admit, it's getting harder. You know how at the beginning of semester, the lecture hall is full. Not now. It hurts my heart when students don't pass who gave it 100%. Others I see after finals crying, upset, even worse arguing with instructors over their final grade.

I have no empathy for students who expect to pass who don't attend class/clinicals, don't do their work, never study, come late, leave early, yet still expect to pass with pity points . I learned a very valuable lesson this past spring semester when I passed the theory portion of my class by 1 test question. I promised myself I would NEVER be in that situation again. I changed my study habits, I went to my instructors when I would have problems with material, I asked other students to break down topics to me I couldn't grasp after numerous attempts, reviewed my notes with others, watched youtube and MOST IMPORTANT: I did not cram. I still had test bug jitters, but my anxiety level disappeared because I went into my exams prepared. I knew the material.

Some topics I get immediately and others I don't. It takes me longer to read and make my notes. The one girl who would laugh at me, made fun of me & how I studied in advanced, invested in supplemental learning material really hurted my feelings.

Guess what? I passed the class and she didn't.

I don't know why the OP is not passing. What I do know is, she has been struggling in the class for awhile. 4 % is not 4 points. Nobody wakes up failing a class. It doesn't happen overnight. Why she didn't get help sooner, I don't know. Over break, she needs to regroup or rethink this field.

I fail to see what your point in attacking me is. Like what did you get out of it? Were you bullied by someone and are taking it out on me? For your information, I am not a "rhode scholar" who aces everything. In fact I got Cs in two of the science pre reqs, I have NEVER received extra credit from a college professor (and didn't need it to pass anyway). I have never taken a class with curved exams. The grade we EARN is the grade we get. This includes both my pre reqs as well as my nursing core. I am not acing my core courses either, but have a very comfortable B that I worked hard for. I do not get 100% on everything and have never pretended to be some almighty all knowing nursing student. So again, what was your point in calling me out?

I don't feel someone should be proud of having to beg to pass because they couldn't pass by earning a passing grade. Furthermore, I dont agree with taunting other people because an instructor pitied them and passed an otherwise failing student. It's like handing person a championship medal just for showing up and trying hard, regardless of the fact they didn't all win. I in no way stated that this made the poster a bad person. Nor did I say they would never be a nurse. Same for the OP. I purely stated that getting passed to the next block or to graduation, when the fact is that you actually failed, is not an accomplishment.

But I can say that I am not "jealous" of him, nor anyone else, who gets extra points to pass. Why would I be if I, myself, am passing without any assistance from the instructors. I study hard. I EARN my grade. I have no need to be ashamed of that, nor should I be admonished for feeling like that is how it should be. There has to be a cutoff. Some people are going to fail. Thats just how it is. I understand that some people are not good test takers. And some people give it their all. And some people go to tutors and try everything. And that some of those people are going to fail and find some injustice or feel like they should be given point purely for trying. The truth of the matter, even though it may sound harsh or mean, is that not everyone will pass. ANd not everyone who tries hard is going to be a nurse. Nurturing a students effort and rewarding a failure with passing points just sets that student up to expect that in the future. Only the future is real life practice, and the failure could means someones death. No amount of extra effort points will bring a dead person back to life.

The line is drawn at the stated passing grade in the syllabus/school policy. Pretty sure no one will ever find the opportunity for sympathy points listed in a syllabus as a way to earn grade points. Grades need to be objective with tests and other measurable methods of grading. Subjective grading does not belong in the college classroom. Four points below the pass cutoff is below demonstration of minimum competency. Do not pass go, do not collect $200, retake the course. I would not want to work with or be the patient of a nurse who got through school only because they were given sympathy points. Nursing is not a career for everyone.

Ummmm, I knew you were not a rhode scholar. Stating my opinion does not equate to "being attacked" or having been bullied and now wanting to take it out on you.

Let me make things clear to you so you can understand my point: There will be people who pass/fail in all areas of academics. I agree. That's just how it goes. I too work hard for my grades, and could care less if someone gets an extra point. However,

1. You stated you NEVER received extra credit from a professor in your nursing core classes and prereqs throughout your collegiate career???? You have never taken a college level class, and the instructor never offered extra credit? Not one class? Not one point?

2. You never taken an exam that was curved? Not one time the instructor has done this??? Not one class? Not one exam?

3. You never taken an exam in ALL of your time in college, and the instructor threw out some test questions that were questionable??? Not one exam?? Not even one question?

PUHLEAAAAAAASSSSSE. I hate to call people liars, but you are one. Or, you have some "impaired memory" deficit.

As far as "bring a dead person back to life" has nothing to do with a few extra credit points. Don't know where you live. Here in Chicago, new hire nurses in the hospitals have competencies that have to be completed, test, med dosgs and skills check offs before they can even hit the floor with their preceptor. Just because a student has all A's, or did not struggle in class does not always translate to a competent nurse and vice versa.

I totally agree with your point. A bar has to be set. Not only for minimum competence, but to insure NCLEX pass rates stay high enough to keep a schools accreditation. However, this is why I stated it depends. Last fall semester, I had a friend whose mom had a series of strokes within a few months, she lived, and earlier this year she passed. She did her best to schedule the doctors appointments around school, and once she became hospitalized, she went as often as she could.

The instructors in all of her classes (she's a semester ahead of me), allowed her to makeup the work, etc. Guess what? She failed one class by 2 points. I was shocked and appalled. My friend was the power of attorney, had ALL of her mothers health documentation, the obituary, and documentation to show she was buried out of state 14 hours away. She couldn't get the two points. Do a conference or something with her? In situations like this an exception should not be made? No I'm not being bias because she is my friend, but have a heart.

ExpBrittany, perhaps if you repeated your same arguments at least 3 more times, people will agree with them. Emphasize said talking points with exaggerated words that remind me of a valley girl to show how incredibly smart you are. Especially since you are getting your BSN instead of an ADN, which obviously makes you better.

Love your threads and talking points! You are Ahmaaaazing.
