Professors fail everyone?

Nursing Students General Students

Hey so I was wondering if a nursing professor will still fail you even if you put in a lot of effort over the semester to do well. Like you went to go get help from the in-school tutors and visited her after you didn't do well on tests and stuff.

I'm going in the final for my Womens/Peds class right on the brink of failing. I have to raise my grade 4 points in order to pass. My grades have steadily been improving over the semester and I honestly can say that I have done my best.

Will the professor still fail me if I don't do so well on the final?

ExpBrittany, perhaps if you repeated your same arguments at least 3 more times, people will agree with them. Emphasize said talking points with exaggerated words that remind me of a valley girl to show how incredibly smart you are. Especially since you are getting your BSN instead of an ADN, which obviously makes you better.

Love your threads and talking points! You are Ahmaaaazing.

I'm simply stating what mrsboots87 said she has NEVER done ;). I don't need people to agree with me, but when someone decides to be dishonest for whatever the reason, at least make it believable. It's not even something serious enough to even be tempted to lie about. It was just her claims of what she mentioned are more than likely false.

Remember: If one statement in the question is false. It's all false

This is why I emphasized what she said

The OP has received some great advice with the consensus being that students receive the grades they earn.

We wish the OP the best with their final.

Just a reminder to debate the topic not the poster.

I would be more appalled if the school picked who to pass and who to fail based on sympathy. I cannot imagine this person would want a handout. Being a nurse is not given out because you "feel sorry for someone." What about the next person who walks in and shows they were abused as a child. They have "documentation" .should you pass them as well? What about someone who's dad dies 1 week before a test? Do you know how many cans of worms you open if you start passing people because you feel sorry for them? If you are to sick to work or go to school then you STOP school or work. If a nurse kills my mother with med error because she was sick that day will that get the lawsuit thrown out? Well..maybe the judge will "have a heart." and ignore the law. Who knows right?

This is quite silly (and very off point), but it it bothering me. The title is "Rhodes" Scholar (named for the founder of the scholarship, Cecil Rhodes--with a S).

Ummmm, I knew you were not a rhode scholar. Stating my opinion does not equate to "being attacked" or having been bullied and now wanting to take it out on you.

Let me make things clear to you so you can understand my point: There will be people who pass/fail in all areas of academics. I agree. That's just how it goes. I too work hard for my grades, and could care less if someone gets an extra point. However,

1. You stated you NEVER received extra credit from a professor in your nursing core classes and prereqs throughout your collegiate career???? You have never taken a college level class, and the instructor never offered extra credit? Not one class? Not one point?

2. You never taken an exam that was curved? Not one time the instructor has done this??? Not one class? Not one exam?

3. You never taken an exam in ALL of your time in college, and the instructor threw out some test questions that were questionable??? Not one exam?? Not even one question?

PUHLEAAAAAAASSSSSE. I hate to call people liars, but you are one. Or, you have some "impaired memory" deficit.

As far as "bring a dead person back to life" has nothing to do with a few extra credit points. Don't know where you live. Here in Chicago, new hire nurses in the hospitals have competencies that have to be completed, test, med dosgs and skills check offs before they can even hit the floor with their preceptor. Just because a student has all A's, or did not struggle in class does not always translate to a competent nurse and vice versa.

Seriously what is your deal. What I mean by attacking me is that you sarcastically tor apart my first response. You are now calling me a liar which is a) unfounded as I am not a liar nor am I lying, and b) you don't know me. You just didn't like my very blunt opinion on extra points. Get over it.

1) Nope, never, nada. I cant make it any more clear. My college professors have NEVER offered extra credit. Maybe on he sly to those who needed it. I don't know. But to me. No. I have never received extra credit for a course and have never asked. Even in one of my C courses that I needed a 87% on the final to pass. I got an 88% and barely passed the course. Still no extra credit. Maybe your professors have offered it (and I find nothing wrong with extra credit assignments if they are offered to everyone), but it doesn't mean that every student has been offered extra credit assignments.

2). Again, nope, never. Have not taken a curved exam. And furthermore, I fail to see the point of this. If exams are curved, they are curved for EVERYONE. The OP is asking for an exception for ONLY them self. And curved exams can also do a lot of harm to a grade if everyone does well on the exam. I am actually glad I have never had an instructor that uses curved exams or curved grades in general.

3) In your original post you did not ask if a test question has been thrown out. Furthermore, that would not be extra credit. That would be a poor question getting thrown out and EVERYONE either gained points, or those questions were taken out of the total for EVERYONE. So again, that does not pertain to my original response either.

I dont understand why you have decided to get on my case and basically misconstrue my entire post. I never said someone with poor grades would make a bad nurse or that they were going to kill someone. I dont know why they failed in order make that determination. I said that pitying a students failure sets them up in the future to expect to be pitied for further failures. You misunderstood my example and I am choosing not to explain it further. If you want to choose to misconstrue my every post for whatever reason you have, then thats on you.

PS) My memory is quite good. Hence why I am doing pretty well in my course. :nono:

I would love to see your transcripts. I'm gonna assume you are a rhode scholar?

I would laugh but......

Do you even have any idea what a Rhodes Scholar is?

1. I'm not sure where these colleges are that give out bonus points. You can include me as someone who never received a bonus point in college. Not a single point. Zilch.

2. A curved exam is way different than bonus points. A college professor is the better one to talk about it than me, but basically a curved exam means that the professor increases grades across the board (to everyone, not just his/her favorites, not just the ones that gave lots of effort); and/or the scale is changed (for example, instead of 93 and up being an A it is now 88 and up)--again this benefits everyone and is not bonus points. I have taken an exam that is curved, but no exams in nursing school (None!) were ever curved.

3. Happens all the time. Again, however, this is nowhere even close to being bonus points! Exam questions are thrown out based on item analysis of some sort. Questions are not thrown out to benefit just the people who show good effort--they are thrown out because they were bad questions and they should not have been on a college level exam.

Wow, this thread has taken a turn. Going back to the OP and I haven't seen the OP come back, to me it doesn't matter if it is 4% or 4 points. I attend class every day, going to clinicals when I feel crappy like yesterday, will study for the test next week. I do all I need to do for my class. I can't help it that I am getting the concepts and someone else isn't grasping it even though they are trying hard. Whether she gets 4% or 4 points hurts me and my grade essentially because I won't get those points because I don't need the help. My goal is hopefully to be valedictorian. Just a goal I set for myself. So getting B's on tests hurts my goals. Should I be able to go into the professor and beg for some points for an A because that is what I need to meet my goal? Of course not. But nobody will feel sympathy for me because I passed the test and am not having an issue with failing. Also, if the professor gave me the A on a test why is that fair to the rest of the class? If you received an A and maybe studied a little longer than me you deserve that A and I don't. I'm failing to see the difference in what I am talking about and what the OP is talking about. And why do certain people on here think it is ok? I'm sure if they heard my predicament they wouldn't feel at all sorry for me. I'm just trying to show this from a different point of view.

Again, why the hate? I am truly curious now. In my original response, I never insinuated any of what you called me out for. You chose to believe that yourself and the sarcastically attack my statement. Now you are assuming I am a liar. On what grounds? You should really get over yourself. Maybe re read my original post and see that all I said (condensed) was that people sholdnt be proud of having failed and being passed anyway because it is not an accomplishment. An accomplishment is passing on your own. If you are passing on your own, then why do you care so much about my college career? Why do you care about how I took tests or if I received extra credit or not? Do you feel this will somehow discredit and internet stranger who isnt lying but you think they are? What benefit to you gain from trying to "prove" me a liar? And what grounds do you have for doing so? SO if one college professor in you school has offered extra credit, that means EVERY student EVERYWHERE has been offered extra credit at some point? Because a couple professors at your school curve their exams, it means that EVERY student EVERYWHERE has had a course with curved exams? Do you know what anecdotal evidence is, because you are using that in an attempt to "prove" I'm a liar. Did it ever occur to you that I may have purposefully found out which instructors curve tests and avoided them, and that I have been fortunate enough to be in a nursing program that does not curve exams? As stated before, curved exams can hurt grades just as much as they can help grades. I have CHOSEN not to take course from instructors who curve. As far as extra credit, I guess I just have the luck of the draw in having instructors who havent offered it. You must have a boring life, or have just decided to to dislike me for God knows what if you spend this much effort to "prove" me a liar. Move on. We have pretty much the same argument for extra points. My way of stating that on this discussion was just more blunt and to the point as yours was.

But I am over the ridiculous "argument" with you. If you want to deem me a liar, then that's on you. At this point I just dont care anymore. Good day.

I have been coming to AN for a few years now. I certainly don't say this lightly...this may be the rudest, meanest personal attack I have ever read on here. (Maybe there is a meaner one that I have not had the "pleasure" of reading, but this is the worst I've seen.) Do us all a favor and apologize to mrsboots87--she did nothing to deserve this attack.

Maybe this is why college degrees are worth less now than they used to be, if professors are treating adult students like kindergarteners and giving extra credit projects.

Actually, it was bugging me, too, but didn't want to be picky! :)
