why is all nurses so negative and inaccurate? I checked this website before I ever went to nursing school and read all kinds of post about how 85% people are rejected from nursing school and it is impossible to get in unless "you know someone." I didn't find this true at all. Seriously, i had a 3.37 GPA overall in college and still managed to get into accelerated nursing school. Also, while in nursing school i read about people who had applied to "over 300 jobs" and had yet to even get an interview. When i applied to nursing school i applied to ten place and got 6 interviews and had my pick of jobs( this was in 2010). I only know a few people in my nursing class who are truly struggling to find work. Now I work in area that has very few young educated people and has many elderly people who need medical care. So we have a good amount of jobs. But i truly believe that the majority of people who post on here were the unlucky ones who are strugling with their career. Just an FYI to all the nursing students out there: study hard, remember common since rules, and don't worry too much about what people say on allnurses.com.
I also get discouraged. I just told my husband a few days ago that I was to the point of giving up on nursing altogether. The stories about people not finding jobs for 2 years.... Depressing! But not only that- the stories of lateral violence, new nursing being looked down on, ALL nurses being looked down on by other people, hospitals not giving a damn about employees... I can go on and on.
But the fact of the matter is, I have to take a chance. I WANT this! Right now, I have a clear picture in my head of where I want to be. It might not turn out that way, but I at least have to pursue it and find out for myself.
I used to feel the same way you did. I came here and thought MY GOODNESS is there anything positive about nursing. You have to realize though most people are more prone to vent and share bad experiences then good. This is Customer Service 101. They will say one bad experience can get around to numerous people where one good experience might not get out at all.
So people come here and they vent their frustrations so they don't end up on the news for using other channels to get it out.
BUT this board also offers tons of support and a lot of that support.
I think one of the biggest problems here is you can't read tone on the internet. Sometimes it can be pretty obvious, but a lot of times people don't intend to come off as they do and it will create a lot of negativity.
Sort of like that whole you can say one sentence in 3 different tones but the exact same message and people can receive it 3 different ways. People come here and they post in a way that isn't received well and that will also spark a ton of negativity.
Anyway, got off track a bit. I try and make sure to post about my positive experience because I know the negativity can get overwhelming. All you can do is post your positive experiences too; but it's probably best to do it in a way that doesn't in turn, put down everyone else here.

This is exactly what I did. I read the stuff here but I decided I would be in control of my own experience and continue to have a positive attitude and in turn I have had a wonderful experience. Truly between school, finding a job, and starting said job, it's all been great. School had it's ups and downs but it was great 98% of the time. But I refused to let myself get sucked into all the negativity and if something did happen I didn't let it ruin me or take over. I got over it and moved on quickly.
1. life isn't about lollipops and rainbows. people have bad days! and if they choose to vent about it, there's a clearly labelled red x button on the top of the computer screen which can be used in the event that one feels they are wallowing in misery.
2. no one says allnurses is the final authority on nursing. take everything you read with a pinch of salt and make your own decisions based on your own instinct.

I wasn't trying to make anyone mad. I just wanted to give people an optimistic perspective. I hope that a little optimism didn't make anyone mad.
A little optimism is good. I am a newbie, yes I saw the negative/depressing posts. You know what I did?? I started bypassing them and reading the more positive posts. I guess you will see what you look for, just another point of view.
I'm happy for your circumstances and glad that you realize that you are indeed fortunate.
However, just a couple of points:
For-profit nursing schools have cropped up all over in the last few years, alleviating much of the overcrowding and wait lists in nursing schools. So yes, it is indeed easier to get into nursing school. However, that development has led to this reality:
There really are thousands and thousands of new grads who have been unable to find jobs for 3 months, 6 months or even 1+ years. The stories that you read day after day on allnurses.com are not exaggeration. It truly is that bad out there for the majority of the country. Except, apparently for those who live in areas that have very few young educated people and also have many elderly people who need medical care.
As a new graduate, I completely agree that this website made me SO NERVOUS about finding a job. And in the end I got a job in the specialty that I want to be in in a city with very few new grad jobs. However, if I had not known how hard people were struggling to find jobs, I may not have been so aggressive in my approach. I valued every consideration and interview that I received because I knew that some very smart nurses were looking for a long time for a job. I wish that no one had to struggle as a new grad RN, but if anything it has made me so thankful for my job and that I actually get to work as a nurse.
why is all nurses so negative and inaccurate? .
pymschrs for me when the first thing I read is "why is all nurses so negative and inaccurate" it immediately set the tone for your post, which for me was on the negative side.
There are many out there who honestly and truly have had a difficult time finding jobs. They have tried their best, they are not defective or lacking in their education or who they are. They just plain and simple have not had the good fortune that you have had. I do not read their posts as negative but as a person who is struggling to make their way in this world.
It is so easy to judge others when we have not walked a mile in their shoes. Allnurses is not negative, it is a place where others come for support and comfort during times of stress and uncertainty.
Now I understand as a new nurse or student where a person would begin to feel uncertain about the career path chosen. But instead of just reading the posts jump in and ask questions and I am sure that would shed some light on how the person who posted the vent is feeling and why.

Well chalk it up as a little street knowledge then. Should you run into situations similar to what you have read as negative here, and boy you betcha they are real and quite possibly in your future ...or not - you might know how to navigate those bad situations just a bit better having read some negative post and all the advice given to that poster. Be happy if good luck is your lot and be blessed that what you've read here so far is not yours to endure.
