Yaaaaaay!!
My hospital is getting rid of PG....
Yaaaaaay!
Could someone please explain what press gainey is? Thank you.
Not to be a smarty or anything, but my definition of Press Gainey is that Press is Satan and Gainey is spawn of Satan invented to make our lives a living HE@#. The surveys ask asinine questions of the patients such as comfort of waiting room in the ER, staff showing concern for condition, explain all delays, comfort of patient rooms, etc. These are things we should be concerned about, but quality of the actual care we give should be more important.
Just my:twocents:
Press Ganey isn't even accurate! First of all, they don't send surveys to every pt. The random sample theory just doesn't work in this situation! True, not everyone would return them, but they are rating our unit based on sometimes 4 surveys sent in per period. One bad one and you're in the toilet. ALSO, they are supposed to be UNIT SPECIFIC, but we always get some back that b*tch about time in the ER, or the nurse on the unit they were transferred from who was rude. Also, people will be in ICU for a week, stepdown for 3 days, our unit for a day, then home, then they get a press ganey from the hospital and put stuff about all the other crap from other depts, and we get hit, even though they were only with us for 18 hours. The whole system just makes no sense to me! I thought SAFETY was supposed to be the number one goal. I'm not totally opposed to custoer service. I still believe in pt's rights and that we should be pleasant to them and their families, but when they get out of line, I want to be able to tell them, haha!

Hubby was just in my hospital for what started as a GI virus and ended up with an MI. The press ganey that I got was absolutely ridiculous!!! He was in the ER(for 24 hours, no beds), one floor for 8 hours, CCU for 48 hours, and a step down unit for 24 hours. The PG made NO distinction for each unit, and they were drastically different.
I ended up writting a letter, because the PG could in NO way relate his hospital experience.
If I, as a nurse of 24 years, couldn't figure out how to make it an overall good survey(and I tried) and still be honest. Certain areas were amazing, others....not so much. So those who were wonderful would have been dragged down by the ones who weren't.
I got very specific in my letter, but sadly we all know it won't carry as much weight as a PG with all 5's.

The tops of our surveys say please rate your experience at XYZ Hospital Unit 12345. But nobody EVER sees that!!!!!
Our's have NO distinction...believe me I looked!!! A very poor method of measuring patient satisfaction.
It doesn't matter anyway. People want to make comments about their entire stay, and they are going to, whether it says UNIT A or not on the survey. The whole system is freakin crazy! But what can we do about it?
Personally, I think that if you came in septic and ended up on a vent, and then you walked out of the hospital with no major complications or safety issues, we did a "very good" job. But because the ICU nurse wouldn't put a cot in your room for your girlfriend, or the nurse on the stepdown unit wouldn't give your nephew 7 cartons of chocolate milk, or because you had to wait for your CT due to a trauma who needed theirs first, we have to deal with all this crud. It is RIDICULOUS! We do NOT work in a service industry, and they need to stop trying to make it one!
