President Biden thread

Published

Wow.  No one has started such a thread yet?

After promising that most K-8 students would be in schools in the first 100 days,  apparently Joe is afraid to lead on this and has drastically scaled back that goal.

Instead, we're shooting for about half to go to school at least one day a week,  by the end of April.

I think it's pretty natural to compare a sitting president with his predecessors. I do weary sometimes of the "but Trump" default when it changes the topic.

But it's not just a liberal thing to compare a sitting president with a past one.  This was written in May of this year.

Even if you didn’t vote for him (and I did, twice), you miss him.

I mean, really miss him.

Donald J. Trump, our 45th president, duly elected in 2016, took office Jan. 20, 2017, and the following four years of his presidency constituted a political roller coaster ride of historic proportions.

His instincts were spot on.

His smile was infectious.

His indoor tan was … curious.

And mostly (except for those tweets), he did everything right.

During the Obama years there was the "you miss me yet" memes from Bush fans.

Maybe Trump has caused conservatives to feel more sensitive about comparisons? Something changed...I think what changed is that too much of Trump's rhetoric and behavior is not socially acceptable or something to feel proud of.

Makes me think of the song, "HOW CAN I MISS YOU IF YOU WON'T GO AWAY?"

"Rail workers unions blasted President Biden Monday after he pressed Congress to force the organized labor groups to accept a tentative agreement in order to avert a strike.

“Joe Biden blew it,” Railroad Workers United Treasurer Hugh Sawyer said in a press release hours after the president told House and Senate leaders one of his top priorities is to stop the looming labor strike.

“He had the opportunity to prove his labor-friendly pedigree to millions of workers by simply asking Congress for legislation to end the threat of a national strike on terms more favorable to workers. Sadly, he could not bring himself to advocate for a lousy handful of sick days. The Democrats and Republicans are both pawns of big business and the corporations,” Sawyer added"

Biden’s Railroad Deal Falls Apart

Quote

...A dispute over sick leave is the biggest reason for some employees’ reluctance. The tentative deal guarantees one day of paid leave to workers calling in on short notice, while the current contract offers none. After its vote, the maintenance worker union said the offer showed “management holds no regard for their quality of life.”

But the presidential board rejected the request for more short-term sick leave, saying current terms reflect unions’ own preference over decades of bargaining. Policies vary across each railroad, but most employees are already paid for sick days after the first four. Carriers say that guaranteeing more paid days off would upend schedules in an already understaffed industry.,,,

I guess the "celebration" was a bit premature.

From September:

"President Biden on Thursday celebrated an agreement between rail carriers and union leaders to avert a national rail strike, but labor officials faced immediate questions from the workers whose support they need to ratify the deal."

Even from this article,  it was apparent that approval of this deal was far from a sure thing.

Kind of like his student loan bail out.

That was pure dishonesty.   They knew it wouldn't hold up and just needed it to last through the election.

The rail agreement wad a touch of that too, but is mostly incompetency.

The House passed bipartisan legislation to avert a rail shut down. It’s now up to the Senate to decide if we need to endure a shutdown.

So much for Democrats looking out for the little guy.  Oh that's right they never do.

In a separate vote, 221 to 207 voted to add a provision to add the number of paid sick days. Are you saying the workers are the little guy , or the rail companies?

If you have to ask who the little guy is, you don't get it.  So why not let the unions vote on the contract?
