Prepare yourselves, the drug addict on Dr. Phil is a nurse.

Now I am not going to make a negative or positive comment at this point because I have not seen the show. I only know three things at this point. One is that the promo they are running specifically says the woman is a nurse. Two is that yes, chemical abuse among health care workers is a real and growing problem. Three is that up until now Dr. Phil has been shall we say "unsupportive" of nurses.

Yesterday I watched part of his show, and he had a couple on where the wife beat the crap out of her husband when he was drunk - repeatedly. It was pretty harsh, from what I saw. The woman was a "nurse". Is this a trend?

where did you hear about him being unsupportive of nurses....and why?

I remember him apologizing to nurses for the doctor/nurse affair show awhile back. I don't know that he's unsupportive of nurses.

Apparently we're just a popular topic on his show these days. Aren't his sisters nurses or something like that? I thought I read that somewhere.

The unsupportive claim comes from several threads I have read here. Type in Dr. Phil under search. While it is true that a recent show he had some positive things to say, it is also true that he got a lot of flack for being unsupportive in the past.

It bothers me too. I don't think he is intentionally portraying nurses in a negative light at all. But yesterday he kept saying over and over "you're a nurse" "she's a nurse, folks" Like a nurse is supposed to be perfect. I don't know what her being a nurse has to do with the fact that the woman has some serious mental problems.

Now the drug thing...

Why not do a show about an anesthesiologist who steal and take drugs? Oh, I know, because when a DR does it they get 50 chances before they get in trouble. Then they just settle out of court and never admit to anything.

Seems to me this might be payback for all our letters chastising him for his unkind statements about nurses. Can we say passive aggressive??

The statement that brought him hatemail were on the lines of all nurses want to do is 'play footsie with the doctors and steal one away from their wifes so they don't have to work anymore. '

(Jeez, not again...)

I think his words "you're a nurse" were to imply "of all people, you think you would know".

That's all i'm saying here, how i personally feel about him has no bearing here, but i know this thread will turn into a slam-Dr.-Phil thread.

Its coming on tonight on CBS I think at 8pm Eastern. I didn't hear the remark about nurses on the commercial but maybe I will have to watch it now.

I actually really like Dr Phil. He's an aquired taste, I think! I never heard his comment about nurses playing footsie. Everybody says something stupid every now and then. I'm just glad he stopped plugging his book every 10 minutes on the show.

My comment about how he kept saying "you're a nurse!" sort of got on my nerves because why should she know any better than any other abuser ? We're the worst of the worst if we screw up. God forbid if we have a bad habit, get addicted...Don't get me wrong, I'm sorry, that woman was a huge loser. I can't think of ANY excuse for her actions.

No profession, no level of education makes a person drug abuse proof. Are some groups less likely than others to have members that use drugs? Of course there are but that does not exclude the possiblity.
