Premature baby 'comes back to life'

Published

A couple from Kafr Yasif in the Galilee received the shock of their lives Monday when the wife's miscarried 610-gram fetus, which had been declared dead five hours earlier, was found to be breathing.

Hmmm - and I thought cold stress was BAD for infants! Now they are saying the cold kept her alive?

It might have slowed down her metabolism.

Ug! Wonder what her head u/s looks like?

I think this goes way beyond cold stress, perhaps comparable to the "protective" effects of hypothermia in cold-water drowning.

I'm kinda wondering how that baby with respirations and a heartbeat was pronounced dead in the first place...?!?

Having cared for 22 weekers, I can vouch for the difficulty sometimes in seeing and hearing (with a stethoscope) almost imperceptible chest movement, cord pulsation, heart tones and lung sounds that are likely to be very irregular, with long pauses. Add to the difficulty, the purplish color of the baby's skin and the likelihood of hypothermia in the delivery room and I can understand how the baby's vital signs may have been missed.

I truly don't believe that the physician or nursing staff acted inappropriately.

How very sad for the family.

We had a baby like that a while back. 23 weeker in which the parents didn't want anything done .... they just wanted to hold her and let her pass. Hours later she was still breathing and actually crying. By then the parents didn't feel right not doing something, so she spent the next 3 months in our unit, then went home.

Definitely a miracle and not something of the norm.

My heart goes out to this family though, sad.

Meanwhile, hospital officials said they had lowered the age at which fetuses will be treated as being potentially viable from 24 to 22 weeks.

You have got to be kidding me!

Our great creater is good and allows these little miracles to happen. My daughter was born premature due to preeclampsia on 5-15-08 at 1lb 8oz she is now 5lb 5 oz and doing great and no apparent problems. Hail to the great creater!!!!

Congratualtions. I hope you daughter continues to do well.

You understand there is a great difference between 23 and 27 weeks. It's not just about the weight.

A couple years ago a mom here delivered at 24 weeks and didnt want anything done. She had watched a friend go through it and refused. Fine by me. 14 hours later....he was still alive. I guess the cold kept him going. They said they had to bring him up to the unit after that long...he did fairly well and went home...dunno how he is now.

I'm happy that your wee girl is doing fine!

But, I must say, in all my years in the NICU, I have never worked with "the great creater" ...only other NICU staff, absolutely overworked, understaffed and under appreciated!

The "great creater" never once relieved us for a tea or pee break during a long LONG shift, just our team do that. Never once showed up to draw up drugs, to bag a wee one,.... to give cardiac massage....etc!

Forgive my cynacism, but thanks for any "Miracles!" go to NICU teams the world over...

WHEN the "great creater" shows up and makes us all our first cup of coffe after ten + hours..then I will be grateful. Till then... NICU TEAMS....you ARE FAB!!!!!!!!!!!!:yeah::yeah::yeah::yeah::nurse:.

We had a set of twins about two years ago, twin-twin transfusion. The smaller of the two was only 380 grams at 27 wks. The bigger was almost about 1000grams! Both are alive, but it is the bigger one who has the grade III IVH and ROP. The little one, despite having had coarctation has now caught up and is doing amazingly well! She's still small for her age, but that's her only "deficit".

Babies never stop amazing me!
