Pregnant and working as RN

Updated:   Published

I would like to ask this to anyone who has worked as an RN while she was pregnant. I am 4 months along (my first), and work a 12-hour floor that is extremely busy. Sometimes I don't even get a chance to sit down to chart until the shift is over and I've handed over my patients. My question is this: has anybody worked a floor like this? Were you able to keep working up until your due date (or close to it)? I'm not sure what to expect. We are short-staffed (like almost all the other places these days) and I don't want to let pressure from management keep me working longer than is healthy for me or my baby. Also, what about after the birth? When did you return to work? Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

Sounds like we are going to have a baby boom here on allnurses.com

Yeah, must be in the allnurses.com water. I'm staying away from that!

*Taking a big sip of bottled water*

gotta stay away from that allnurses

pregnancy inducing water!

congrats to all of you, you will all be wonderful parents and I hope your pregnancies are healthy ones and that labor - when that time comes - is quick and easy!

that being said, all the other more experienced mom type nurses gave great advice about working well pregnant

So I echo what they say.......

cheers!

Wendy - stick with me, kid - we'll avoid that evil pregnancy virus lol. I'm with you - scares me to death when everyone on the unit starts "turning up" pregnant!

Congrats to those that are getting 'em that wants 'em ;).

If it's in the water at work, then it must be in your keyboard or mouse here! Glove up!!

Yes cheefuldoer these are our first babies!!! And it is way cool, my husband and I couldn't be happier.

hhhhmmmmm....sounds like there was some Valentine's babymaking going on here :imbar ;)

(actually looking at the calendar maybe that's a little off-OK maybe Spring Fever rather than Valentine's Day!)

Congratulations to all the mommies-to-be!

I managed to waddle to work and up & down the stairs up to just before the day of my delivery....My co-workers gave me a "let's just humor her since she could squish us with all that weight" looks when I told them that the 13th would be my last day of work before my leave & I wasn't due until the 20th. I just knew--I could feel it was time. OK I was a day off, I delivered on the 13th-close enough! But anyway, trust your body's warnings and take off early if you feel you need it.

Dang, I'm with the other 'pregnancy avoiders' here....maybe I should spray my keyboard with spermicide??????????????????? Will bug spray work in a pinch?? ;)

Kidding, only kidding.....

Lots of preggos (staff) at work, too....sheesh!!!
