Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I was wondering if anyone has taken A&P 1,2 and microbiology online and where. I checked university of phoenix but the courses are only 3 credits and I need them to be 4.

I'm not asking whether or not I should take them online, thank you for your concern, I'm simply asking where these are offered online. My local community colleges do not offer them as an online course.

Thank you!

Make sure they are accepted by your nursing program. You don't want to spend the time, energy & money to find out they don't accept online sciences.

Having said that I'm taking micro & A&P 1 through New Mexico Junior College. It only cost around $700 for both classes & I start on the 17th.

Please check with the nursing programs that you're interested in. Many do not accept online for any courses that require a lab. The purpose of a lab is to actually interact with the subject at hand, whether it is bones or micro-organisms. This experience cannot actually be accomplished online - with existing technology. Maybe in a few years, when virtual reality is readily available? That's why those courses are worth 4 credits... the lab makes up the difference.

check out straighterline.com they offer both A&P I and II as well as microbiology.

Not every school accepts Straighterline as they are ACE credits not standard college credits. Straighterline has partnerships with a wide variety of schools and may have information about yours. That said many schools if admitted require you to obtain pre-approval before taking outside courses or even challenge exams (CLEP). Often from the registrar or departmental academic advisor. Follow school policy so you are not surprised later.

The schools in my area that accept online labs sciences require a hands on lab component (you must buy a new microscope and new lab kit, if the vendor does not have you on the list as someone who purchased the kit you are automatically dropped from the course) where you stream your lab practical exercises via webcam proctored and pictures with time date stamp from the computer.

didn't mean to imply that any school would or would not accept the credits... the OP simply asked for suggestions and had already been warned about the fact he/she needed to verify that his/her intended program would accept the classes.

Thus I simply offered a suggestion :) FWIW -- my school would not have accepted any credits from straighterline

Excelsior is a distance education offering LPN to RN or RN to BSN or MSN. They will not accept Straighterline for core courses (A&P, micro, developmental psychology, statistics, etc) but will for basic general education such as language & composition or history

Clovis community college super cheap tuition easy enrollment also.

I know you said you're determined to take them online, but for the sake of your own education, I wouldn't. It's very important to get the hands-on lab experience for A&P and Micro. It might leave you at a disadvantage compared to the other nursing students when you've only taken those courses behind a computer screen.

With NMJC there is a lab component that I will be graded on. I have to buy it all myself.

Johns Hopkins and the University of New England offer science classes with virtual labs online. I'm just hoping they're not more difficult than an in-person class!

Yes, they are offered online. Unfortunately, you will typically see them offered for 3 credits and not 4 credits because of the lab component. While some top schools do offer science courses online, it's typically only the theory component and not the lab or worse a science class for non-science majors. The Nursing Program(s) to which you are applying have the final say as to whether they will accept them. I would contact a Nursing Program Advisor and see if they accept online science courses. If so, do they have a list of "approved" online course providers.
