I'm just not sure what to make of this.

I took Probability and Statistics online this semester, and have run into all kinds of trouble. I've taken several online math classes with this school, and never had this happen.

If I did not complete, and score an 80% on all of the homework assignments, I was not permitted to take the exams.

As a result, I had to withdraw, because I always get stuck on at least one of the homework assignments. The latest one, I was getting the wrong answer but doing the problems correctly. My professor rounded in her examples yet apparently we were not to round in order to get the correct answer for the program to accept.

While I realize if I worked ahead, I could have addressed the homework issues ahead of time in order to be sure I was able to take the exams, that isn't always realistic. I generally work as scheduled.

My issue, is that I was willing and able to take the exams, but couldn't. I am thinking of going to the registrars office to try to get this class refunded, but I don't know if it's worth it.

What do you all think? Am I over reacting?

I doubt you will get a refund. You stated that if you worked ahead you could have addressed the issues pre-deadline and probably not missed the submission deadline to take the exam. You knew in advance what the requirements were to take the exams up front.

Frustrating? Absolutely. Does it feel unfair? Probably.

I would just move on and learn from the experience.

That's kind of what I was thinking. Sometimes it's hard to see past my feelings.

Yes, it is reasonable for them to expect you work ahead of schedule. A due date for homework is just that - the date that it is due. You need to ensure you give yourself enough time to complete and understand the homework by the time it is due. When you are working online, it is even more important that you do not wait until the last minute because things like power outages and the internet going down happen. Every instructor I have ever taken on online course from has listed in the syllabus that such occurrences are not acceptable excuses for late work. So yes, do your best to work ahead of schedule.

You are expected to work ahead. In every single math class I have ever taken, I would get all the homework done within the first 8 weeks of the semester so as to not have it interfere with my other classes along with getting a basic understanding when it was covered in class.

I do not believe that you are overreacting, unless this strange policy was clearly addressed in the course syllabus available to you when you first started the course.

Good to get some opinions.

The class had exams every two weeks with about 8 hw assignments in between. Each one took me at least a night, if not longer and then a night to learn the material. I'm totally fine with having to take a 70 on a homework assignment, but I just think it's insane that I wasn't permitted to take the exam without scoring an 80.

I don't know how they expect us to learn the material, do the homework and take the exams while working ahead of schedule, lol. Oh well, I've signed up for it next semester, hopefully I will have better luck.

Sorry you had such a bad experience. PPs have offered great advice for resolution.

FWIW, there has been quite a bit of evidence in academic journals ... entry-level Statistics is NOT suited for online instruction because real-time interaction with a (qualified and engaged) instructor has been found to be a critical factor for student success.
