Non-traditional Nursing Hopefuls

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

How many of us are out there?

I am 34, married with a 10 month old. I already have a bachelor degree and a master of public health. Hoping to be accepted into a nursing program this fall. Waiting for letters is soooo hard!

I'm 41.5, was a stay at home mom for 15 years, my pre-reqs are 17+ years old, have 6 kids (ages 6-15), commute 65 min each way to school, found out my husband of 19 years was a lying, cheating dirtbag and so kicked him out one week before classes started last September. I'm now almost finished my second semester of the accelerated After Degree program (we already have a B.Sc. in something and are now getting a B.Sc. in Nursing to be an RN in 6 semesters/two years) while earning at least half of the top marks on assignments and exams in my classes. If you want to, you can do it. But it might mean no time for friends, self, TV, haircuts, etc. Every singe choice for me always involves: spend time with my kids, sleep or study. Nothing else exists!

42yrs young, single mother of an 11 year old. Was just accepted into 2 accelerated BSN programs! :)

Finishing up my pre reqs by the end of July. Hoping to hear some good news for this fall or spring 2015.. good luck to all!

Wow, just looking through these posts, I can say you guys are really having a hard time doing school and everything else. Kids and work can throw you off for prereqs. I dont have kids myself, and Im 19. Srsly, I admire the fact that you guys still get it on even though it's hard. Go for the gold everyone.

Thanks kdmf12 !

Just a quick word of encouragement.....

I was 32 and married when I started my BSN. I already had a useless liberal arts degree and about 10 years in IT. Owned my home & 2 dogs. Was the lone, older, tattooed, opinionated, atheist, non-traditional student of color in a sea of 90 blonde, white 19 year olds, all fresh out of high school and living in the dorms, at the day program at a private Catholic women's college. And I was on a full scholarship. No kids, but I definitely had other pressures and stressors, and had to keep a 3.0 GPA at all times for the scholarship. Plus I worked as an EMT and a CNA part time.

I won't say it was easy. It was insanely, fantastically difficult. Not only was the program academically rigorous, but I was an outsider in a very conservative environment and under the boot of the scholarship I had. I did the first two years on antidepressants and Xanax, the 2nd two years on Red Bull & vodka, my marriage crumbled, I lost my house, and gained 50 lbs. But somehow, I pushed through. I graduated magna cum laude and passed NCLEX on the first try. I somehow survived and stood firm while everything else collapsed. Stay strong, don't buy into the Superwoman myth and embrace your failures. It all comes out in the wash at the end.

33 years old. I have 2 girls who are 5 and 6 yrs old. I am also in the military. I start in the fall.

Congrats to all! I am 44, Two boys, one is almost 19 and the oldest is 24. 3 dogs, one husband and both boys are out on there own. the youngest is in the Navy and I start my actual program in two weeks... I look at how far I come and I smile.. I look at how far I have yet to go.. and I sigh and then go make a list of things to get done. good luck! We non-traditional students have some good life experience and some orginizational tips up our sleeves after working and having children!
