A&P PLEEEASE help!!!

ok so I've started my fast paced (8 week) A&P 1 course - with no background in chemistry or biology. We're using Marieb's book and the first chapter was very understandable to me, but chapter 3 is SUPER confusing. I don't know anything about cells, and it's really going over my head. I have GOT to do well in this course, and would love any advice, links, anything really that would help me master or even begin to understand this chapter. Looking through the book it doesn't appear to be as bad (for me) as this chapter. I've never been good with cells. Our test is this Friday and I would really love any help you can offer me - somehow, someway I've got to figure this out before Friday.

We are also testing on chapter 1 the same day, but like I mentioned I get that chapter. I loved lab, and feel I'll do well on the lab quiz for chapter 1 as well.

Chapter 3 is making me panic!

In biology I had a hard time with cells to so I spent one of the breaks looking up videos on youtube which helped immensly and i also googled biology for dummies and found a website ya know like the book _____ for dummies....and they explained things in ways that i could understand. good luck to you :)

I just took this class last semester and have the same book. Aside from investing time studying - these three things helped me the most. The website listed below, making my own flashcards and agood study group. (A good study group is one that has persons who want to learn, willing to help each other understand the material and is an encouragment to one another & keep it fairly small)

The www.myaandp.com website that is listed on the second page in the front of the book. If you have a new book then you get free access to this website. If not, you can "buy access"; I found it very helpful. There is also a flashcard option that you could use - but I made my own so it would stick.

I hope this is a help to you. It did for me and my study group . . . the 4 of us passed with A's. Have a great semester.. will be thinking of you when I am studying for my A&P II class.

Oh yeah one more thing ... be careful watching other video's. Sometimes other explanations are not what you need for your class. Verbage, content amount and the education level can be different. I found that I was chasing my tail trying to find video's that match exactly.

My best advice is to drop the class and retake it after you have studied the prereqs for it and/or at a slower pace.

Otherwise, Kapit's coloring books might be helpful. I thought they had reasonably thorough and concise explainations.

Also, concentrate on vocabulary. If you can understand the distinctions between the terms in a subject area, you will also understand most of the content.

The various videos can be very, very helpful but sometimes I wasted a lot of time on unhelpful or inaccurate videos, maybe check out the sticky links at the top of this page for a better chance at getting helpful and/or accurate links. Maybe also search through Daytonite's posts.

I think I'll do ok in the rest of the class - it'll be challenging, but I can actually take in and understand the material I've seen throughout the book. It's the cells that I think I'll have the most trouble with.

I do need to find a study group, I'm going to ask around tomorrow!

I do have access to this website, and I am watching it now. I plan to go over everything in chapter 3 today over and over.

I really need an A too, and just cannot afford (timewise) to drop this class.

If you have a syllabus for your class, go to that chapter. I imagine you have objectives for the unit. Focus on those objectives and the answers for those. Then do the vocabulary for the chapter. Don't try to absorb the entire chapter, focus on the objectives/high points. It will become more manageable.

Thanks, I have a syllabus but it's not broken down by chapter. I do have the power point notes though - and also a practice quiz for that chapter. I'm going to try and memorize everything on the powerpoints, and the practice quiz - I'll do the vocabulary too. Thanks!!!

The course objectives are a good idea to pinpoint what is most likely to be on the test.

I don't think I would agree with this. While I wouldn't have suggested taking AP1 as an 8-week course, a background in biology isn't necessary nor would it be helpful for most of the class.

OP-I would reiterate the need of making your own flash cards. That's the main way I studied for this AP1 and I got an A :up:. We also used the same book as your class, but my class was also 16-weeks. In my case, I actually make electronic flash cards with a program called Cuecard, (you can find it on cnet) and then print them out. But I have a scanner that lets me digitize my study guides and other materials. However, if you have the power points you can still copy and paste from them. Traditional flash cards work too of course, it just takes more time to make them.

RLtinker - thank you! Dropping the class isn't really an option - I don't want to quit just because it's difficult...I want to push ahead and learn the material.

I also didn't want the 8 week class, but unfortunately my school has moved to doing this in a split session only. So the first 8 weeks it's A&P 1 and then the second 8 weeks I'll do A&P2.

It is MUCH more fast paced than I had hoped to go, but I don't have any other classes. I do have 5 children, but I do not have a job outside of the home.
