Pre-Licensure: 2 or 3 years for BSN?

Published

Something that I've wondered about is: is there any different in taking a program that is 2 years versus 3 years for the same BSN degree? I don't understand why some universities are able to get a student in and out in 2 years, whereas other programs take 3? Some even have 2 and a half (5 semesters)...

Wouldn't it be best to just take the program that's 2 years so that one can go out and get a job sooner? What are the pros and cons of a 2 versus 3 year program?

I went to a 5 semester program that by the calendar did take 2 1/2 years to complete.. but I would suggest that you really double check the what is being called a 2 year vs. a 2 1/2 year program.. We didn't go during the summers and other programs around me that did complete the program in 2 years had heavy summer loads.

Frankly I wish more programs offered the ability to go full time during the summer. Not all of us are kids needing a summer break. I'd love to be able to get it done as quickly as possible.

The 2 year program most likely has summer included. I go to a 2 year school and i must go summers. Also my semester are cut into 2 semester, lasting 8 weeks each.

My school had an on and off deal about offering the final clinical during the summer. It was obviously meant to accommodate the clinical instructor more than anything else and it did not happen every year. Schools set up their curriculums to suit their criteria and student flow. It is nice when there are more than one program nearby and they don't mirror each other so the chances of getting clinical sites improve.

Hi! What school are you enrolled in?
