Posters that are not nurses

Nurses General Nursing

Published

i'm going to keep this nice and polite i promise mods!:)

i'm just hoping that one of the smart student/new nurse posters can answer this.

i know that we have quite a few people on here that do not have the title nurse, either rn/lpn. we have some great, intelligent students, new nurses, cna's, techs, etc. most of them add a lot of interesting elements and variety to the posts and i enjoy reading them.

however, i really want to know something. i have noticed this with several other posters(not the above ones) on several occasions. why on earth would someone that is not a nurse think they could ever tell a nurse how to do their job? or think that limited clinical experience is enough to say they know what a nurse does?

i mean, i would never think of say, jumping in a thread telling ob nurses how they should do something or how they could do it better. i've never done ob (not counting school)

i guess this is just frustrating as it seems people think it's so easy to do this job! it's not, it has hard times, fun times, sad, break your heart in two times. but it's not a job that you can learn how to do in a few semesters of school. it takes years. fortunately, i think that most of our students here know that and respect that.

so, what's the thought on the ones that don't know? is it their egos? overconfidence?

i'm really interested in replies.

The other part of this is that defining the kind of nurse you are going to be and setting your own personal parameters requires personal exploration and bouncing ideas and comments off of other people. It's part of the melding process. That is my two cents, anyway.

Now go ahead and blast me, because I know it's coming!

Why would you get blasted for expressing yourself honestly and maturely? That's a great post.

We all go through a process as students and new grads in defining who we are and what we're going to be like as nurses.

Personal exploration and bouncing ideas and comments off of other people is something entirely different than we are talking about here. It's the "how dare you recap your needle, what kind of nurse are you, I hope you never get stuck by a needle and get AIDs like my cousing who just died, how dare you be so wreckless, what a rotten nurse you are, I would never let you take care of a loved one of mine" that bothers us:roll :roll .

I really don't mind non-nurses posting as long as they identify themselves. Then I understand they have a different perspective. I've learned a lot from the EMT and paramedic crowd here. I do tend to scroll through the "I'm a mother of a nurse" posts but that's the glory of the internet.

I cut nursing students bags of slack since I remember it well. I have a special place in my heart for second careerists and latecomers. Wish I'd had the internet when I was a student (fossil here).

It gets really tiring because there are a couple (or a few) posters that always chastise us on vent threads. You know it's coming.... I find myself thinking....."I wonder when ole so 'n' so is going to swoop down with the self righteous indignation".

They call us names and tell us we just need to quit because we probably aren't good nurses. They say we are judgemental, petty, and holier-than-thou.

Hmmmm...sounds like we're not the only ones that are judgemental, petty, and holier-than-thou.

I truly think the irony escapes them.

It's a free country with freedom of speech and Thank God for that! I don't have a problem with anyone posting no matter their profession I just find it odd that non-nurses and non-nursing students join. I am a nurse and thats why I'm here and not on a real estate forum.

OOOOOuuuuccchhh!!! :bowingpur

i have mixed feelings about non nurses posting here. first, i have no problem with it in a general sense . but i too do find it odd that non nurses and non nursing students join. i mean i am interested in cooking and writing but wouldn't join a chef or author's site. and i certainly wouldn't post telling then how to do their job. i just wouldn't do that, i wouldn't feel comfortable.

now this is certainly a lot different than nursing students posting here. they are soon to join the ranks and hopefully to gain a little bit of knowledge and wisdom and humor as well. and yes, maybe give some too!

dutchgirlrn:

reasons non-nurses and non-nursing students join the website/post on threads:

1. although we are not nurses, we believe that we would one day like to be. therefore we are searching the tool we have most readily available (the web) in search of insight and info from experienced nurses.

some of us, myself included, visit this and other websites, read books written by nurses about their experiences, chat with the nursing department at our colleges about requirements, strike up conversations with nurses, other nursing/pre-nursing students whenever we get the chance---all in an effort to get more info.

2. we want to commiserate with other nursing students/pre-nursing students on the website about what to expect and how best to prepare.

3. we (specifically, i) really appreciate the fact that there's someplace i can go to fill my constant desire (translate: obsession) for more info on the nursing career.

4. fulfilling the requirements for an rn is going to take three calendar years (including pre-req's) out of my life. that's three years of full-time earning potential lost while i'm in school. not to mention the money that has to be shelled out (translate: pulled from my meager retirement account) to pay for the education.

i consider myself and other nursing/pre-nursing students to be prudent decision-makers by thoroughly researching this career choice before we fully take it on. perhaps you think it would be better for nursing students/pre-nursing students to never view or post on a site like this (translate: never get insight, ask questions, get feedback) until after they become nurses??

of course that is not to say that we shouldn't watch what we say as potential newcomers to the profession and have not yet walked a mile in a nurse's shoes. saying there is much to be learned is a huuuuuuge understatement. of course there is much to be learned. and i think the majority of us very well realize that.

5. we want to be able to ask questions of experienced nurses. (what do you think about...what should i expect in...what did you guys do when this happened...how should i handle...etc., etc.)

6. some of us are idealistic. and we want to read about what we think might be our :redpinkhe dream :redpinkhe job. we want to know as much about it as we can.:wink2:

perhaps if you were interested in real estate (and you might be, i don't know) you might choose to investigate as much info as you could find on the topic in your desire to build your career in that field. if you chose to do that i'd be the last person to knock you. i'd commend your diligence on doing your homework-so to speak-and finding out everything you could possibly find out about it before you leapt head-first into a real estate related profession.

athough i am not a nurse yet i am very experienced in other fields that i have explored since entering the working world. perhaps experienced in some fields that you know nothing about. and i'm sure the same can be said for you. lets all try our darndest to be respectful and appreciative of each other at all times and in all posts. after all, aren't we all in the same profession/looking to get into the same profession?

i, for one, am deeply greatful for the existence of a website such as this. i love to hear about the day-to-day nuts and bolts of what goes on in the nursing profession. i feel like i get a complete spectrum of opinions on all kinds of issues from all kinds of people and thoroughly appreciate the insight. thanks allnurses.com! you're the bees knees!! :wink2:

anybody else have anything to add to the list of reasons why non-nurses and non-nursing students join the website/post on threads? any reasons i missed?

take care everybody!

i was already pretty sure of these reasons being the more common ones of non nurses posting. again, it is truly hard to get across one's meaning on a message board  . i will try. bottom line . there are some not nice people in real life and that sometimes extends to posting in this forum. i have not seen any of that in this thread.

again, the issue is not of the posting in general, i and others i think have said that already. it's the rude, unsolicited remarks made. it's hard enough in real life to give constructive criticism, try and do it on a message board? really, nursing is always a learning process and my boss with 30 yrs exp. will ask me things, especially about acute care. we all come from different paths in life and can certainly benefit from each other. share in a positive way, that's all.

you've done this well above!

oy vey...

it's too bad that the above is true. but such is the world i suppose...

i've included a direct quote from dutchgirlrn below in it's entireity. it's post no. 58 if anyone would like to look it up:

it's a free country with freedom of speech and thank god for that! i don't have a problem with anyone posting no matter their profession i just find it odd that non-nurses and non-nursing students join. i am a nurse and thats why i'm here and not on a real estate forum.

i was responding specifically to that post which just made my heart sink when i read it.

i consider it a privlege to be able to visit and post at this website. i've been "out there" in the "real world" for several years. as many posters here are "out there" in the real nursing world. and i can't tell you how rare it is to be able to find free, valuable, insightful information from people who do it everyday. this type of website is not a common thing among other professions.

for all the nurses who feel slighted by remarks, insults, "holier than thou" attitudes:

please try to remember, for most of us (including yourself i'm sure) this website is a great place to post your vents, rants, joys, ideas, etc. but for others the internet is a place to hide. they feel they can say or do anything they feel without recourse. and unfortunately they choose to exercise that ability here. perhaps you could take this into consideration when reading something that someone you don't know, who is hiding behind a user name fascade, slams you. perhaps that would make the retaliatory post/slam hurt/irritate a little bit less. easier said than done, i know.

but let me just say this, (as i too hide behind my user name fascade:chuckle ) that i, for one appreciate you. the care and knowledge you demonstrate on the job as well as the support that you demonstrate here is invaluable. you're the greatest!

and for those of you who have not heard it lately, "thank you!!!"

alright, i'm going to stop now b/c i've got that theme song from the johnson & johnson "we need more nurses" commercial playing in my head.:roll

best wishes to everybody, keep your heads up!!

:1luvu: :icon_hug: :heartbeat :kiss now i think i can just about speak for all the nurses when i say you are welcome!!! and we appreciate you too! we need you guys to carry the torch. i know sometimes it seems like we're trying to scare off people from going into nursing but not true. we do want and need you guys and when you have a bad day at school or clinical or new job, feel free to vent away, we understand:d . and don't be so hard on dutchgirl, i think she was referring to the type of person posting that just likes to stir the pot, the true trolls. i don't think anyone has ever figured out why they're on the internet at all!

i,for one, welcome such questions from a student nurse or new nurse. what is not appreciated once again is having a student nurse , pre-req student, cna or other non-nursing person come on a thread and correct or bash nurses.

point taken casbeez. everyone needs to blow off a bit of steam now and then....wasn't trying to :smiley_ab w/ her. was just (altruistically) trying to respond to post about why non-nsg students visit the site w/ all the reasons why we think the site is so great.

:thankya:
