Nurses General Nursing

Published

Maybe as a tag-along to the thread that has people in a twist over whether or not nurses are being positive enough, or too negative, or whatever, we could try for something a little upbeat.

What has happened to you (or someone else?) at work that made you GLAD that you were there that day? Did you feel you made a difference?

I recently had a patient who had diverticulitis and was facing a bowel resection and somehow no one had either explained to him what to expect or he hadn't been able to hear it. At any rate, when I got him he was scared to death what was going to happen to him, whether he'd be able to eat/poop normally again. Somehow he got the idea he'd need a colostomy, and that freaked him out unnecessarily.

I spent all of fifteen minutes with him initially and watched this fella change from freaked out to calm, once he realized the why's and wherefore's. I then checked on him and let him talk when he needed. I got him after surgery, too, and while most of the time people never even give a cursory "thank you", this man made me feel like a million bucks! He thanked me for taking the time to talk to him and apologized for being "a baby". Oh, man, he wasn't a baby at all, just a human being who needed another human (who happened to have a medical clue) to calm him down.

I felt proud to be a nurse when I left for a couple of days :)

I got a double dose today. Yesterday, I got pulled to work in Stepdown, which I really didn't like very much since I was thrown on the floor, nobody wanted to explain anything to me, and I pretty much had to find my way on my own. The nurses weren't nice, and were not helpful when I had questions. Yesterday after I punched out, I decided that Critical Care nursing was not for me. This morning, I was back on my floor, and I noticed the Unit Director from Stepdown wallking down the hall. She came right over and said "I see you're back on your floor"... I said yes, and said that my Preceptor had been pulled to work Stepdown today. She gave my arm a squeeze and said "You did really great yesterday. Please come back anytime." I about fell over... I told her I would. It's not my first choice, but if I get pulled, I gotta go to the unit. Later on this afternoon, my favorite patient got discharged. I got her cleaned up, dressed, and ready to go. When I got her transferred to her wheelchair. she held out her arms and hugged me and gave me a kiss on the cheek. For all of the crap I took yesterday, today sure made up for it... except now I don't have any favorite patients to pamper and spoil. :uhoh3:

I just recently got my license and have been hesitating about looking for a job in the field. These positive stories reminded me why I went to nursing school at all, and motivated me to get going on finding a job as an RN. Thanks, all.

CONGRATS! :balloons:

Well I just have to add mine here. I was on my way into work from the parking lot and see a car parked in the pick up zone. I the see one of our nurses look into the back of the car and run back into the hospital. Well being me I had to check it out, and there he was a baby coming out to play. The father was leaning into the back seat but made room for me. Well I could not stop there so another contraction and all that was left in were the feet. No one was there but us yet and I hoped the other nurse went for help and supplies. I then had dad pinch the cord, and I stimulated the baby getting a cry. After that a delivery team arrived but I was already so involved and stimulated myself, I just barked out instructions for the DR. to give me some clamps and sizers, clamped and cut the cord, and wrapped him in blankets. When I handed the baby out about 40-50 people and workers had gathered around and clapped. I forgot about the mom at that point and saw the Dr. getting her up out of the car, so I went back in and helped her out. I go on high risk deliveries as part of my job in the NICU so I knew what to do, just never delivered one on my own before. The baby was great went home the next day. I am glad help came out though as I was about to dry the baby with my scrub top. I don't know how or who did it but there were people holding up blankets for privacy and we got the supplies we needed out there and it all worked like as if we had practiced it, but I know I never practiced that before.

Thank you so much for sharing that story. So exciting and wonderful all at the same time.

Had my 90day eval & was given an "above average" rating & told that she enjoyed having me on as a new nurse & that I am an asset to the floor!

Made me feel GREAT!

this happened a week ago with my shift. for a week we will be given one patient that we will attend to. we will personally monitor their v/s and i/o, give their meds, and well, do other procedures that are within our knowledge and skill (with the permission of the clinical instructor and charge nurse of course). so to cut the story short, i was thrilled because all of the patients ive been assigned to were discharged (because their conditions improved) whilst on my care. it just feels so good whenever my patients smile and say thank you for the things that i did. =)

ok, Very different from last weekend!! We had time last night (around midnight) to order an Indian take away, and all sit round the station and eat it together, Felt like a Saturday night, instead of work, even though the "wine" was peach juice!:lol2: had a Fab night! (then we ate chocolate cake...how bad were we?:lol2:)

Sometimes a bit of downtime during a shift, when you are used to being run ragged, just recharges you. :monkeydance:

I got something like that at my 90 day eval, and it made me absolutely GIDDY I was so pleased to be appreciated like that! It's the BEST feeling, isn't it? Congrats on getting that lovely thing, that you can keep in your "I'm great" file :)

You're on your way, baby!

Like you, down time is SO hard to come by, that we cherish it. I'm jealous of the party you all had, but maybe there's one in my future, LOL!

Party on! :)
