Did I do the right thing???
Here is what happened - it is sort of a long story so...please bear with...I'll make it as short as possible
On the night of Dec 3-4 my neighbors (above me) were having a loud party so I called the cops - someone ran out and jumped off the balcony and they found marijuana on him and I think arrested him....the party quieted down since it was dissipated but then the two girls that lived there argued all night and then got into a screaming match
Last night (Dec 5-6) I called the apartment manager - they were being noisy again - this was around 1230 - things didnt get quiet after this - she told me to call the cops after 20/30 minutes, well I called them around 300 in the morning when I heard the second fight of the night and someone saying "let me go" a couple times and what sounded like things be thrown
When the police arrived they wouldnt open the door - kept knocking for about an hour then finally - used forced entry
Well, THIS IS MY QUESTION:
I had to work Today 9a-10p - I work in a group home and I would have had to drive them places
I also have epilepsy and know I shouldnt be this sleep deprived - when I called the scheduler though and explained
I got
"Well, you shouldnt do this your first week on the job"
Yes, it is my first week on the job - and I NEVER would have done this - but I dont think putting myself at risk or the lives of five of your clients is a good thing....
I dont want to get fired - but -
Did I do the right thing calling in "sick"???
Well, my already rude neighbors just got ruder....yes, it could happen...
They left a note at our door stating - "Clean up the dog S**T!"
How sweet of them, well I guess if they dont like the dog poo poo on the lawn I can go find some for them and then put it somewhere they will like it more...
No, just kidding, I will just tell the manager like always about their stupid childish antics and then have an IR written up and hope they get "expelled" from their kindergarten upstairs....
how ridiculous...
Went back to work today - everything went well, explained to team leader about "disorder" (God I hate calling it that) she had no idea....even though I told the scheduler I guess she didnt give a damn and either didnt listen or didnt care...probably both...
First, you did absolutely the right thing. Although you didn't say specifically, I'm guessing you are working towards becoming an RN (if I've misread, then please forgive me). As you work in that direction, you are going to find out along the way that the nursing shortage is causing people to do funny things, like wanting people to work when doing so isn't safe. But, a warm body.....
You MUST take care of yourself. No one else will. Remember that as a nurse, or a transporter, or anything else, it is impossible for you to care for patients while seizing.
I've also had another thought about those neighbors of yours. Now, it seems to me that the Americans with Disabilities Act has some pretty big teeth, including some that deal with living conditions. I could be wrong, but it seems to me that if there is a situation in your apartment complex that could exacerbate your condition, and the landlord knows about it, he/she must make some adjustments to accomodate you.
I'm not sure who the local agency you would need to check with is, but I'll bet someone here can steer you in the right direction. But, given the fact that you are working, and these idiots are interfering with your ability to work, I'd think you have a highly valid complaint.

Actuallly the ADA is being weakened by the republican congress by the minute. Successful ADA cases are EXPENSIVE (no lawyer is going to give you pro-bono for a housing problem, sorry) and usually concern reasonable accomodations by employers in the workplace OR in federally funded places like schools.
As a volunteer paramedic, I was axed by montgomery county EMS based on my diagnosis alone (this was direct discrimination) and lawyers wouldn't touch it because it was a *volunteer* position.
I am not exactly trying to discourage you, but if you're goal is to get rid of the nasty tenants, you'd have more luck trying to get them nailed for drug dealing or something if you want to play hard ball.
You may also want to try having all the other residents sign a petition and present it to the appartment management. The threat of ADA to management *may* work if they don't know how weak the law has become.

Of course you did the right thing!!! It was good of you to be "thinking ahead " to what COULD have happened, rather than worrying about how you'll be viewed by management/coworkers..whatever. And there's nothing worse than a coworker who comes in and drags ass all day/night (not that you would at all!!)
Never, EVER feel bad about calling in if you need to - and judging by your story, you did the right thing.
Hope your situation at the apartments gets better soon!!!

OK, since this thread is over 2 years old I am going to ask a question. It may get me flamed but I am going to ask anyway. How can someone with epilepsy have a job where there are required to drive residents around? I think I would be uneasy knowing the person driving my family member around had epilepsy.

I was wondering the same thing. Wonder if the OPs driver license is (or should be) an issue.
You absolutely did the right thing. Your health and safety do come first.
Hopefully you can resolve the situation w/the apartment life. I had to move. It's dependent on your management as to whether anything is done or not. Mine was lame and it never got better. I just had to move. I hope never to live in an apartment again.
I wish you well.

I believe that if you've been seizure-free for a period of time (can't remember how long--sorry) you can be licensed. However, have a seizure and you get your license suspended for that period of time. (My husband once worked with a woman whose job included home visits. She got careless about both her rest and her medication. It was a real hassle for the rest of the staff while they were waiting out her suspension.)

That is OH SO TRUE! The drama that can happen when the wrong folks get access to your business...
