Please help! I have to find a hospital...

U.S.A. New Jersey

Published

I am a senior nursing student in NY and live in Bethlehem, PA.

When I graduate in May, I plan on working in western NJ, somewhere close to PA, possibly off of Route 22 or I-78 and wanted to know great hospitals for ER and/or ICU nurses. Since there are so many crital care specialties I will most probably find myself in SICU, MICU or CICU.

I need to start looking, but the prospect of finding a job in a new state is more daunting than I had expected.

I would appreciate any and all responses as well as tips on settling in the area.

Thanks so much. I appreciate reading all of the responses and look forward to reading all of yours.

Why you would like to work as a ICU or ER nurse when you will be a brand new nurse??

An ICU nurse need to have very sharp and special skills.

Myself would go just for Med-Surg. I think is the best way for a new grad to earn experience and then move on.

But this is my opinion anyway. I wish you the best.

Thanks for your concern, but I have worked in hospitals for the last seven years and am currently working

In a great hospital in NY. I've worked on med-surg units for the last two years I am looking forward to continuing to build on the experience that I have.

Its unfair to assume that this person has no experience.

I'm confused. I thought you said you were a nursing student. How is it unfair to assume that you have no experience working as an RN?

Hey guys, I totally understand that experience is needed, but do you think that critical care or the ER cannot be handled by a new RN? I know that these areas are demanding, but I know graduates who are in both critical care and the ED and they are doing well thanks to great prefects and hard work.

I welcome the discussion. I was hoping to get some advice on hospitals, but I guess that isn't what everyone wants to talk about.

Since we are on a different topic, I do have a question for everyone.

I have had nurse educators tell us that nursing is one of the only professions where the mothers (older, more experienced nurses) eat their young (new, graduate nurses). Unfortunately, it is something both myself and other students have noticed also.

What do you think? Why is this the case?

nothing is impossible but i wouldn't risk my license just for having a cool position in icu ..

please don't get me wrong, i appreciate all of the advice you've given. maybe i should have posted this question in a seperate thread because it wasn't directed towards you. i appreciate your taking the time to respond. this question has been one that my friends and i have discussed for some time now and i just wanted to get the opinions of others regarding it.

forgive me if you were offended, i certainly didn't want to do that.

please don't stop offering advice; it is well-intentioned and appreciated.:wink2:

I have heard of plenty of people going right into ED or ICU right out of school. I think these units will take a promising student so they can mold them. You will just have to do a really long orientation program. Just my 2 cents.

I would love to go right into the ED but have been told by many recruiters that this is not likely to happen as a new grad. I don't have hospital experience like you do so that may help you get into the field. I hope that you are able to, but just want you to know that right now it is hard to find a position as a new grad in any department. I went to school in Philadelphia and moved out here after I graduated in December. The job market in Philadelphia is as bad for new grads as it is New Jersey.

I really hope you get a position where you want but I if you can get a med/surg position I would definitely take it. Good Luck with everything.
