Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi, all who decided to check out my page! Hopefully anybody can give me any advice, for that would be extremely helpful on this nerve-wracking journey.

Here's my dilemma: I do not know if biochemistry will cover Ochem, or general chem, or maybe both.

Lately, I decided to browse all these nursing BSN programs and they all seem to want either ochem, general chem, biochem, and some say they want all.

From what I presumed, I thought rigorous courses, such as Ochem and general chem were more targeted for pre-med students?

I do briefly recalling my counselor saying, "You must take chem 3b, is it biochemistry which is basically an intro to gen, and intro to ochem?

Therefore, is it safe to assume that taking that one class, biochem, would actually cover two advanced classes, ochem and general chem? If anyone knows this answer, and maybe even already surpassed this issue for themselves, that would be so very appreciated! This question has been pestering me constantly, so I thought this would be the best community I could turn to. Thank-you all in advance, any advice on my journey would be so greatly helpful.

P.S. I plan on checking out assist. org once it is back running, maybe that site would help me. But, I also like getting help people. :)

Your best resource is your school. Are you looking at CSUs? (I see you're in CA) I know the community college here has a chem class that's transferable that's specifically geared toward applied science majors, and meets all of those criteria. You can also try contacting the nursing department and see what they say. Call or e-mail them if you've already explored their websites and haven't answered your questions there.

Look at the course description for the classes you took. Also look at the nursing schools requirements. In my area, the nursing school

Websites list the local equivalent prereq classes offered by local school.

That being said...

In my area, the community college RN programs require general chem as a prereq to the regular prereqs like A&P and Micro.

Only the BSN program requires Organic Chem.

After I took general chem, I found out there is a single class that fulfills both the general chem and the o-chem requirements.

Also, there is a choice of 2 different o-Chem classes. One is "easier" and geared to prenursing students and the other of a general organic chem that premeds or predentist or prenursing students can take.

You'll need to consult your course catalog or speak to an advisor to get your specific question answered.

At the school where I'll finish the BSN, both Gen Chem & Organic Chem are required prerequisites before taking Biochem. However, this varies from school to school. Always best to get your answer direct from your school :)

I hate to repeat this, but what the heck: your school program advisor is your best bet in correctly answering these questions. For the most part, schools do require similar pre-reqs, but that isn't the same as IDENTICAL pre-requs. The description of a course in one school might be different enough from another to make it not applicable.

Talk to your academic advisor for the most accurate info. And don't get discouraged if it seems a bit overwhelming....it so often is at the beginning, for everyone. And as you chug through it, it all comes together :)

I agree with HouTx, btw.....photo is cute, but could be creating some trouble for you later. Just words from the wise ;)

I wouldn't encourage anyone to assume that one class can count for both Ochem and General Chem even though it may be true. If the class was in two parts, you might have a chance because they count # units for science courses. I had to take both as prereqs to take Biochem but maybe that wasn't the case for you. I would take your transcript and a course description and ask the counselors for the school you are interested in to see if you can sign a petition to get credit for those classes. Every school is different so there really isn't one right answer for all schools unless you play to retake both classes. I'm currently retaking the easier Ochem because some schools have a 5 year limit on classes and to kill time while I'm waiting. I'm not going to retake general chem.
