Please explain to me why people think this is weird?

Published

Ok. Maybe I am just not seeing it, but why do most people think it weird that I am allergic to oranges? I go to the doctor to for a visit and they ask what I am allergic to, I say oranges, the MA's or nurses look at me like I am nuts or like they have never heard of that before.

People have allergies to weird things but whats so weird about oranges.

Also, can anyone answer this for me because I keep getting 2 different answers:

1 pediatrician has told me that my allergy to oranges will be passed to my son, the next pediatrician says that there is no chance.

Who should I believe?

I am believing my motherly instinct and not letting him have oranges until he can tell me that he does not feel well after eating an orange. If I ingest any type of orange, I break out in severe hives, get an excruciating migraine, vomit, pass out, the works. So of course I am going to be protective of my son. Sorry, I had to vent about that, I am just frustrated because nobody seems to believe me about the allergy to oranges.

Peach pie... Are you allergic to Latex? Hmmm watermelon hadn't heard that one and I am from the south hehe.

I take you are not allergic to peaches! HEHE

Ok I will quit trying to be a comedian now

I'm allergic to strawberries and might be allergic to peanuts.

Don't think you're weird with your food allergies. I had two friends in college who were allergic to practically everything.

My father used to be allergic to chicken (but not eggs) for abt 10 years. His latest allergy is mustard seed. I just hope neither is inherited...:uhoh21:

As far as passing it on to your child, you should be able to get a scrach test done at an Alergist, I would think. Me, I'm alergic to black walnut pollen... there are three in my yard...lol

Before your son can develop an allergy he has to have an initial exposure during which the immune system builds a "memory" of the experience. He won't have any allergic reaction during first exposure but afterwards all bets are off. Most allergies get worse with increased exposure.

That's why I'm afraid of bees. I've only been stung once so I don't know if I'm allergic to them or not, it's the second sting that gets you.

I'd start him out slowly on oranges and keep some benadryl handy. He'll probably be O.K.

well i am allergic to raw apples. (i can eat apple crisp or pie with no problems) When i was litttle apples would trigger awful migraines that were so painful i would pass out. Even apple flavored candy caused a mild headache. then years later i tried to eat a slice of raw apple to see if the same effect would happen and my mouth got puffy and my throat swelled up. Yep, apples are no longer part of my diet. lol

I believe it. I'm allergic to raw tomatoes. Cooked, I can usually eat them without a problem. But if I get raw tomato on my lips, they blow up like balloons! Just HUGE swollen lips, it's disgusting, and they are so tense that they hurt. You know how a tomato changes flavor when it's cooked - like it loses the acidic flavor and becomes sweet? That's how I can tell if I can eat something with tomato or not - the sweeter it tastes, the easier it will be on my lips.

A certain kind of onion triggers severe migraines for me.

I'm allergic to one brand of tape, and THAT'S been hard to convince people that it's just one particular kind i'm allergic to.

I agree with Tweety...enjoy being unique..and consider yourself lucky -

One of my best friends is allergic to benadryl....

no that's not a typo...

You can be allergic to just about anything natural or synthetic...

;)

Allergic to Benadryl...how ironic!

Two of my daughters have a reaction to oranges. Their skin breaks out around their mouthes. (happens with other citrus also)

I don't go to extraordinary lengths to keep them from eating citrus. Should I?

No, no latex allergy, thank goodness. Thank goodness I'm not allergic to peaches either, my existance would be miserable.

Skin that contacts the fruit juices also can break out if I don't rinse off the area with water.

The good news is that on both sides of my family, the watermelon allergy disappears by menopause.

I was allergic to Benadryl when I was a kid, so that's not so uncommon either, I guess. I used to get the weirdest looks about that one. I took Atarax instead when I needed an antihistamine.
